Hi Garmin Users, Just a heads up on downloading Lifetime New Maps, with Vista. After download is complete, when the Launch button is clicked, it may take up to 30 minutes, for Vista to figure out what to do with the large file. I have contacted Garmin, and they said it would be passed on to the programmers, to put a notation by the launch button. I hope this is of value to the rest that have Vista!
Thanks
I was wondering why i couldnt get my maps to open up on my laptop, works good on winxp and with mapsource, wanted to load it the second time on my laptop and it just sit there...... I HATE VISTA.

But this isn't really a Vista issue. It's an issue that the file is big and it takes a while for the computer to read the file and to start extracting it.
problem you are talking about is related more to hardware speed
The problem you are talking about is related more to the speed of the CPU, Memory and Hard Drive than the operating system.
I have 3 hard drives in my desktop computer that allows me to boot any of the three OS's. One has XP, one with Vista and one with Windows 7 and they all take about the same time to extract and install the map updates.
I do computer consulting so I need to be able to test software under each OS to troubleshoot problems.

UAC
I read a tip somewhere (this forum or another one maybe) that turning off UAC (User Account Control) in Vista corrected this problem. I tried it on the last map update and it did seem to launch a lot faster ... may have been my imagination since I was specifically watching it.
If you want to know how to turn off UAC, just go to the "Help and Support" on the Vista menu and type "Turn off UAC" in the search field.

alandb, thanks for UAC control advice. Any thing that helps with vista os is a-ok.
long, long time!
I had forgot about that, but yes, that happened to me on my Vista latpop. Took a long long time to ask for permission. Probably was 30 minutes. I was about to give up, but me not knowing what else to do, I just sat there, frustrated. Then the window popped up and I was able to run it. I have since upgraded to Win 7. So, maye next time it will be better.
Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

I experienced the same thing on my Vista PC
Thought the machine had frozen up. Was so happy to come back about 30 minutes later and find that the application for loading new map had finally started. I thought it was corrupted or something.

Hmm.. This could be why I had no issues with map updates when I ran Vista 32, I canked the UAC and the system ran better - it still locked up from time to time though.
With Windows 7 64-bit it was flawless; no delays or issues - I am glad that I made the change.

I had the same issue initially. I would say it is just poor programing.
