Thomas Guides are essential

I volunteer for the Red Cross and an emergency communications agency. Many times when we have been called out to assist, we have used our Thomas Guides to find out way around. When you are looking at areas that may have been affected by say a flood, something like the Thomas Guide is vastly easier to see and plan on than any GPS map.

Also the ability to copy the pages, highlight the areas of interest and pass these out to other volunteers is worth their weight in gold.

Paper can still rule in many instances. GPS is nice in the field but the paper maps get you to their in the first place.

Lifetime Maps Only $80 at Amazon....

There's a special right now on Amazon for lifetime maps for only $79.99 which makes the decision quite a bit easier.....but I'm with you, in 2-3 years I'd probably rather buy a new GPS for about $200 than spend $75 for a one-time map ugrade, which is precisely why I just bought a new 765T to replace my Nuvi 360. Nothing at all wring with the 360, but when map updates are $75, it's like getting a $75 discount by buying a new unit.....

Also, I wonder what happens if you buy the "lifetime" maps ties to one unit and that unit fails within the one year warranty period--I'm assuming that Garmin would transfer the lifetime maps to the replacement unit, but does anybody know this for sure??

Well, I hope they are more up to date in your area than they are in mine. The last set I bought for the DC area were so far out of date it was a crime. Some subdivisions that had been in for 10 years were not shown. The book was flat missing pages of maps as well - the pages weren't missing as in torn out or lost, they weren't printed. The page numbering was sequential, but entire sections were missing. It was kind of strange to be missing almost 2 miles of city streets between two adjacent pages. Luckily there was another map book in town that was complete - and cheaper too.

Yes, they transfer the lifetime maps to the new unit. It has been discussed here and on other GPS forums.

Reporting errors to Navteq

A friend of mine had done it and they still haven't made any changes. I don't know if they even care.

Maps

Remember they are are only as good as the information provided to them. Upload your favs from Google. it's really a lifesaver.

Reporting Errors to Navteq

In some cases they will make the changes and in others there may be a delay. However, not reporting errors will more likely result in there being no correction. If enough people report an error or update required, the change is likely to be investigated and implemented.

We are all part of a community and should always be working to help make the maps as accurate as possible.

You have to let them know

You have to let them know when there is an issue or it won't get fixed, at least anytime in the near future. Call attention to the issue and it will get addresssed. The squeeky wheel.

Deleted Post

Oops, I posted suggesting Correy submit the errors and omissions he's noticed directly to Navteq rather than sitting around waiting. I see that's already been suggested (a couple of times.) Apologies.

BTW here's the link Correy: http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi...

Cheers wink

As suspected

Although I suspect the listing of a DVD is probably an error, it still doesn't matter as the DVD at best will only contain one update. After that you'll be downloading the updates anyway as Garmin or Amazon aren't going to be sending you a DVD up to 4 times a year.

The $95.99 thing on Amazon appears to be some kind of a download facility run by Amazon Digital Services, Inc. that is differen/separate from the regular nuMaps product offered by Garmin. Obviously you'd end up with the same maps but it would be interesting to know if using this service would be faster than the hassles we go through with the Garmin servers whenever a new map update is released.

The order will be delivered today. And Farrisr, the shipping notice from Amazon clearly states a DVD is being shipped, once you get into the order screens and pays da money it also states DVD.

As suspected, there is no DVD involved in this deal from Amazon. Ours arrived today and it's the 'nuMaps lifetime card' completely overpackaged in a clamshell case.
