Hi everyone,
I have bought 765T and I love it, everything is great. However, net is full of 765T horror stories (see the comments of GPSMagazine review: http://www.gpsmagazine.com/comments/000498.php#comments)
Have firmware updates resolved all the issues?
Thanks

I have contemplated the 765T, but I am not liking the new products that Garmin is releasing. My 760 with the lifetime traffic and maps is trouble free.
The 7xx series is the last to have the upcoming street displayed while driving in map mode. They had to discontinue this due to the infringement litigation law suit that they lost.
I am not sure about the 2xxW series also out at that time, but will find out when I give a new 260W unit to my wife for Christmas.

I think it's safe to say that the xx5 models are the units that no longer show the next upcoming cross street in the green info bar when not navigating a route. All of the 1xxx series units behave the same way as the xx5's

Mine has worked flawlessly.
Mine has worked flawlessly. When was the upgrade to the firmware? Mine shows the upcoming street I have not upgraded firmware since I got it about 6 months ago.

This is a common misunderstanding. The units mentioned that show the next upcoming cross street in the green info banner at the top of the screen do so when NOT navigating a route, or when you're just driving around with no destination or "Where To?" set. Newer nuvis (xx5 and 1xxx) only show the street you are driving on.

I got this one recently and I'm having problems with my bluetooth phone with it. I always have to reconnect when I return.
I don't get lane assist in my city.
But I think the 7 series is the last with mp3 player.
1300T and 1390 have the upcoming street displayed......

I recently "test drove" a 1300T and 1390T from Best Buy--namely to check out the bluetooth speakerphone capabilities (which I didn't like....). But I did like the fact that both of those models displayed the upcoming cross street--something my 765T doesn't seem capable of doing. Does anyone know the logic/reasoning behind this?? It must be a software issue--any way to configure the 765T to show the upcoming cross streets??
As far as the 765T goes, I'm really liking mine--though I've only had it 3 weeks or so. I really like that it has two mic ports in front for speakerphone capabilities, I like the external speaker jack (I plug the 765T directly into my car stereo via the AUX-IN port/jack on the front of my Kenwood CD player) and I love the fact that the 765T has an external mic jack built in to the mount--I bought a $25 dollar noise-canceling mic made by Clarion and the sound quality is quite good--even while driving at 65+ down the highway in my Tacoma with all the road noise!

Bought mine back in July. No
Bought mine back in July. No problems with exception of a short battery life (less than 1 hr). I only use in the car so its always connected to a power surce.
2 Thumbs Up
I like mine alot. I got it on Black Friday to replace my trusty 205. I have experienced the touch screen weirdness, but after I calibrated it using a pencil eraser to touch the dots in the center, it's worked much better. I live in Dallas/Fort Worth, so Lane Assist and Junction View is everywhere....it's a really COOL feature. My iPhone works great, people can hear me fine and I can hear them. POI dialing works. Spoken street names is nice. I'm very happy with this unit and it's a major upgrade from the 205 I've used for the last 2 years. I really like the FM Traffic feature as well.
It's got 3.80 and 2010.10 maps. I have until 1/27 to get my free map update. I know .30 just came out, but I'm going to wait until the last minute in case .40 just happens to come out.
nuvi 750
I had previously bought the nuvi 750, but I did not like the map scrolling due to low refresh rate. Other than that, it was awesome.
okay
working okay at best. nothing much in others that I see around that makes me think they are better than the 765. They may be, but not that appealing for me to consider changing the 765.
bluetooth connect to cell
I had the same problem with my 765. My Verizon 8350 would always ask if I wanted to connect every time I turned on the 765. What a pain.
Took the phone to Verizon, they put the latest phone updates on it. It no longer asks if I want to connect. It just does it.

My choice was a 765T also

My upgrade from the 360 was the 765T I received via UPS today. I live in DFW too so I'm glad you're so happy with the Lane Assist, etc.
We may move to Lake Fork next year in which case I'll be lucky if Garmin can even pick up a satellite.
On the other hand, when I have business in DFW (which is always under construction) those features will really pay off.
I'm glad you like the 765T!

I don't know where I'm going or remember where I've been...without Garmin.
.
Do some routing in town to see the Junction View. Most of the major, and even some minor, interchanges are done....it's a pretty cool feature.

765t
It works great, except when I tried to update the maps. Garmin finally had to do it.

better all the time
I have had the some issues with my 765t. Over time things have got better. The misinterpretations in the touch screen improved after I recalibrated the screen about 3 or 4 different times. The last software update a couple weeks ago has made it even more better. Had also locked up a couple times on long trips before update and reset. Hasnt done that since a hard reset.
I know, "more better"=bad english, but the update did make it even "more, better".
Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.
All Good, except Battery Life
I haven't had any problems with mine in the approx 9 months I've had it, but the battery life is horrible. I always use it in a vehicle, but I know I'm gonna get burned some time when a rental car doesn't have a working outlet.

Get Garmin or Get Lost
I'm Pleased
I've had mine for a few months now and haven't experienced any issues. I use it frequently and really enjoy the traffic feature, especially in the DC area. I haven't experienced the lane assist feature yet but then I'm a DC area lifer so I know which lanes to be in. Hopefully I'll get to use it on one of my big RV trips next spring/summer.

battery life
I checked my battery life to see if it was as short as lots of folks say theirs is. My battery lasted 1hr 35 minutes from full charge to when the battery alert came on. One thing though, I do have my screen brightness a little on the dim side, which probably helps with the battery life.

still prefer my 765t vs the 360
Like others a few issues like having to re-calibrate the screen. That made the task of unlocking the 765T much easier. It seems off a little vs the 360 on my location. Maybe 20 feet. I think my 360 is more accurate but the screen on the 765t is much better.
Was in Nashville recently and the 765t had me go past the street I should have turned at and then loop around whereas last year with my 360 it took the shorter direct route. Got me to the correct spot just took a little longer with the 765t.
I don't use the traffic much unless I'm outa town but I really like the lane assist in unfamiliar cites. Didn't see junction view at all in my trip to Nashville recently.
Garmin Nuvi 765T
Same here. Had it 2 months and still playing with some of the features.

Garmin - Humbug
The 7xx series is the last to have the upcoming street displayed while driving in map mode. They had to discontinue this due to the infringement litigation law suit that they lost.
I've heard this story too, but have not been able to find anything formal about such a lawsuit anywhere.
Besides, a huge percentage of the patents out there aren't worth the paper they're printed on - the US patent office will issue a patent number to almost anyone for almost anything - you could probably patent the wheel if you could come up with a creative way to describe it - wouldn't make it valid, but you WOULD need to prove prior art and such for a judge when the patent holder sued after you laughed at him for making a claim.
Just look at what RIM (Research In Motion - makers of the Blackberry) went through a few years ago. The idiotic judge forced them to pay $600 million in infringement payments, ignoring all of RIM's arguments - and every single patent was ultimately tossed out, not that RIM got any of their money back.
However that was clearly a case of a US company suing a large, rich Canadian concern that was heard in front of a jingoistic judge . . this would be a US company - the market leader challenging some bullsh*t patent litigation company - ought to be fair enough . . IF it is real.
But somehow I get the feeling that there was no litigation and that if there really is a patent, they simply decided it was easier to change the code than to engineer around the key issue or to pay a royalty to keep doing what they were, assuming there really is a defensible patent out there.
For, if there ever was something that is 'obvious to someone skilled in the art', it would be to display the upcoming street names on the screen of a device used to navigate - and that is the true test of validity.
But they still DO display upcoming streets and exits - just not on 'regular' roads. They still show them when on limited access highways.
I suspect that the limitation of display density to 500 meters and the elimination of the upcoming cross-street display are simply two of probably many mechanisms they've 'adjusted' to free up CPU cycles so that they can add more bells and whistles . . . . they're too cheap to put in a faster CPU - and look how they screwed themselves with the switch from SiRF to MTC and the one from Parrot to Motorola . . . everything is dictated by cost.
So they likely chose some features that were loading them down and hoped we wouldn't notice - heck newbies would never know what they were missing and the rest of us could be dismissed as whiners, because the majority have no idea what it is they're missing.
We see stuttering and other symptoms of an overloaded processor in several versions of firmware on a number of platforms . . we see screen update delays on units like the Zumo 660 - they're simply choking for the lack of CPU cycles
And, while I have no idea what language they're programming in, we can be fairly certain that it isn't machine code or assembler, like the old units were.
Most likely they're using some 'C' variant or maybe even something higher level than that allows them to crank out the code quickly, albeit code that is relatively inefficient when compared to the optimization one usually achieves using low level languages. Yes, high level languages CAN be made efficient - but I'll wager that they only work to improve key areas - and not all of those.
Garmin of 2009 is NOT the same company I bought my GPS-V and Streetpilot Color from.
Cheap bastards.

As I understand it, the Garmin/Tomtom countersuits were settled out of court without disclosing the terms, so I think the specifics of whether the settlement caused Garmin to remove this feature is speculation. This article talks a little about the settlement. http://www.technewsworld.com/story/60334.html?wlc=1260200632

Too many litigators in the US!!!!
But
The timing doesn't work . . . The agreement was supposedly made in 2007 and the features were included in models released in mid-2008 (760/780 and everything else).
So that isn't the answer, though it might be an excuse.
I like my surmise better.

I almost got a 765t from Amazon (Refurb) the other day for $10 each, but as it was being shipped to me, Amazon intercepted it from UPS and took it back... Damn, so close!
love my 765t
I've had the 765t for over a year now ... love it. HUGE improvment over my old 360, and no problems with it.

I just got it from Best Buy after having some discussions with them about paying the agreed upon price of $199. Still in the box. Not sure if I want to wait to get the next update (w/i 60 days) free.

just my two cents ...

I just ordered a 765T from Amazon.com. Should be here soon.

Another happy owner
Got mine back in July. Works fine. Only complaint is I cannot pair it to my Palm Pre. Works fine with a Samsung Instinct.
ok and so-so
I've found that my 765 works just fine. Haven't had any of the horror stories happen to me...yet.
I dislike the slowness of the unit overall. You know, when pressing a function it lags, almost like a stutter. Also the battery issue. I always use it plugged in to the car so that is only a nagging issue. My C550 has none of those issues.
So, overall the 765 is ok overall and operation is so-so (due to the latency)

765T in DFW
Im in the DFW area this week on business. I just bought my 765T last week before I left. I have only seen one Junction View on the hwy system this week and one lane assist. I figured it wasnt available in this area. Also, it doesnt speak hwy names or street names. It usually just tells me to take the next exit right, or left, etc. No street names. Maybe I have a bad unit.

You have a standard voice selected and not a TTS voice. Select a voice with a person's name and you'll be all right.
