In some cases, it makes a difference. The newer Meastro's are a completely different design.

Look around on their website:

My 4250 is on ver. 4.85

It depends

From the Magellan web site:

Quote:

Magellan Maestro 4040 Software Update 2.62/3.61 - Release Notes

Fixes

* Improves off-route detection.
* Improves route calculation and route re-calculation time.

The software update version corresponds to your map database version:

* If you have map database version 27, your software will be updated to v2.62.
* If you have map database version 31, your software will be updated to v3.61.

You can locate your map database version by following these steps:

1. Start at the Main Menu.
2. Press the arrow on the bottom right of the screen.
3. Select "User Options"
4. Scroll down and select "Map Options"
5. Your map version is on the line titled "Detailed Map NavStreets Version"[\quote]

4.86 for 4250 model

Its been updated to 4.86 sometime earlier this year, think it was released a little after 4.85. Sadly there have been no firmware upgrades for that model since this spring.

Another 4250 owner ???

Yea, after my post, I figured I should check myself.
It's on the computer, ready to load later today.

Have you had yours give you strange short "detours" for no apparent reason?

On a trip last week, mine routed me around an intersection as if it was closed; turn right, U-turn and another turn right.
It has done similar things before.....taking me into a sub-division to avoid a 6 block stretch of road that is perfectly good.

It almost seems like a "glitch" in the traffic program.....which I have turned OFF. I'm hoping this new software will fix that.

bugs

Yeah I still get some glitches like that. There's a on ramp on highway 58 in VA that will direct me to the right exit, then determine that I didn't take it and find a new route, then decide I did take it and go back to the original route. On the map display it shows me being in the correct place, and a reasonable distance from 58 that it should know I exited. There's also times when it has me driving several yards off of the road. I am not sure if that is a problem with connecting to satellites or just buggy software.
If you are referring to the traffic updates through AAA, then I haven't used those, there isn't enough traffic where I live to have a use for it.

No, live traffic service.........

...that you get from an FM broadcast sub-channel and you must subscribe to as a separate service. AAA has nothing to do with it. AAA supplies a specialized POI file. WHOLE different thing.

The routing glitch is in the firmware and ver 4.86 will not fix it on the 4250.

This version is required for the spring 2009 map update that only comes on and must run on the SD card.

Overall it appears that the new owners of Magellan have decided to not put much effort into support now. This will be the last time I buy an update or even a new Magellan unit.
