Is the truck still under warranty?

Try GPS in another similar vehicle with same am/fm radio.

If it's OK in the other vehicle, then the radio in yours has a problem and does not comply to FCC regs. Receivers are not allowed to transmit a signal strong enough to interfere with other receivers. Practically all of them transmit something, but the FCC set limits. If you look on the ID tag for your Garmin, you will see a FCC ID number. That means it complied with the FCC regs. There is a tag on the radio in the truck with a FCC ID. Computers have an FCC ID as well (class A or B).

If the truck is under warranty, then show the dealer what happens. They should replace it for free. If you get any grief, then call 1-800 number for vehicle brand.

Obviously it is a defective AM radio

If you loose sat signals when the radio is on AM, then the radio is defective. One of the oscillators in the radio must be radiating a strong signal that interferes with the GPS sat receiver.

With no other information, it is difficult to tell you for certain what is wrong, but I would look to replace the radio as a start.
