Locate software/map version

Can nyone help a newbie? I keep seeing reference to the version number of the software and maps. Where do I look to find out what mine is?

I have a nuvi 265WT which has been a good tool. We live in the Seattle area and have used it extensively here. Also used it during a long trip through Wisconsin and then again for a trip in D.C., MD, VA, PA, NJ and it was spot on.

Thanks.

Locating software and map information

Go to "Tools" on the bottom right hand side of your start-up screen. Then touch "Settings." Touch that and it will bring up a screen with 6 different icons on it. Touch "Map" and then "Map Info". This will give you the map version. (The map version will be located at the bottom of the screen.) To get to the software info, touch "System". Then touch "About". This will give you the software version that you are operating on.
(By the way, welcome to the site. You will find a great deal of information on the Factory. Very knowledgable people that can and will help you with just about any problem that you may encounter with your GPS.)

You can start by reading

You can start by reading owner's manual:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-005...

If you hate reading (like me), here's where they are:
Toos > Settings > System -- About
Toos > Settings > Map -- Map Info

I normally press all available icons in the device to find out what's there. If I don't understand it, I'd read the manual. I don't like reading manual unless I have to grin

Map Version

Thanks Maddog and Chewbacca.

Here's what I find in those locations:

Map: City Navigator North America NT 2009.

Software: Version 6.10

So do I assume that I have the earliest 2009 version of the maps? I bought the unit in March and there was some kind of update loaded April 25 and then I just updated the software (firmware) today.

I want to use the unit on an upcoming trip to California and my friend's new home address is not in the database. Nor is it on MSN maps!!!

My Nuvi 760 (purchased in

My Nuvi 760 (purchased in dec 2008) comes with that map too. I'm not familiar with maps version. If you can't find the (new) address on MSN/Bing map, I doubt Garmin has it in the newest map (2010.3)

Did you try Google map? If you can find the address on the internet, you may be able to get your Nuvi to guide you to destination coordinates.

The best place

The best place to see if the address is, or will be in the Nuvi maps, is Navteq.com.

Just enter the address as you would in Bing, Google, or Mapquest. The difference is that if Navteq has it then Garmin will have it in the current update (2010.30) or it will be in the next update. This is because Garmin buys the maps for the Nuvi from Navteq and they are running one update behind Navteq's maps at the present time.

One other bit of advice. When you enter the address your looking for in the Nuvi it will offer to search a particular city in a state (California in your case) or Search All cities in the state. It is strongly recommend that you select "Search All".

Often limiting your search to a particular city will bring back no results. Searching the whole state for a particular address will widen your chances of 'getting a hit'. There are lots of reasons for this particularly for new addresses. Residents know or think they live in Xville but the map data still has the location as part of Ycounty, is one example.
