Updates

The 10th of this month I bought an 855 which had 2009 maps. Garmin gave me the 2010.20 map update and now I see 2010.30 is out. If I'm interpreting their 60 day rule right I should also get the 2010.30 update right? If so, is it supposed to be automatic or do I have to call them?

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Only one map update

I believe you can only get one map update in the 60 day period.... You can look at my.garmin.com to verify.

If nothing else, try calling Garmin to see if they'll do anything for you.

.

As larry_larry said, it's one map update per unit to bring it up to what is current at that point in time.

Read the fine print at the bottom of the page here for all the details:
http://my.garmin.com/maps/nuMaps.htm

It states: "Limit of one free map update per unit."

update

I think I'll call them anyway and rag on them. I don't know when the 2010.20 update came out, but The way I look at it the new 855 I bought had the 2009 maps on it which weren't up to date to begin with so the 2010 update shouldn't count. Probably faulty logic but I'll give it a shot anyway, you never know.

Totally faulty logic. smile But good luck. smile

For those reading along, the general advice is to WAIT until you are closer to the END of your 60 days rather than updating immediately.

This way you can see if a new update comes out in that time period. Because the stated policy is one update per unit.

The upside is that with the updates coming out every 3 - 5 months, the maps are likely to be "less outdated" than they were with the annual map updates.

Probably, But it also

Probably, But it also depends on how long it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere. I've generally found Garmin support personnel pretty good, particularly if you give them a chance and don't jump down their throats from the get-go.
