Up to 4 times......

I believe they advertised "up to" 4 times a year. Nobody promised 4 updates per year.

I just gave in and bought the lifetime map updates today. I'm tired of getting the "maps are out of date" message on my unit. It's pretty odd though. The card for the updates from Amazon is currently $79.99 but the digital version - where they don't have to ship you a card with the code - is $95.99. Both are sold by Amazon. It doesn't make any sense but I went ahead and ordered the "card version" with free shipping. For a savings of $16 I can wait for the card to be delivered.

Map updates are not done on a calendar year basis, they have their own schedule. The 2011 maps will be released in the April/May time frame of 2010.

Garmin can easily state - and be correct that this is 2009, not 2010. According to the calendar they have 12 months to release a 4th update for the 2010 maps.

I'm still running the one

I'm still running the one from july (.30?)
Are things moving that fast to have to upgrade so often?
I'm good at every 6 months or so..(Nothing changes much around here)

I did one map update after two years. In another two years I will just buy a new unit. The old one, with the "old maps" will be a spare. As a "spare," it should be "good enough" for me for at least 5 more years before I worry about the maps being "too old."

So, that is my plan, at least for now.

Is there a way to check the updated maps?

I just used my one free update for my new unit. There has been quite a lot of construction in the past two years and this hasn't shown up. Before I buy an update, is there a way to check the new road additions to determine whether the update is worth the money?

Not necessary to update

Maps used to be issued on a yearly basis, and many people would update on an alternate basis (every two years). Now, through the Lifetime Maps program, Garmin provides quarterly updates. You can purchase the lifetime program for less than the cost of 2 upgrades.

The new map can be displayed at their website. You have to click and scroll around yourself to see any changes you might be interested in.

In my case, I had been waiting to see if a new road extension had been added in Bonita Springs, FL, near where my in-laws spend the winter. I found that it had been added in the 2010.40 map.

Here is the link: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=253&pID=1456#coverag...

They do not publish any kind of changes "list." It would be huge to print that way.

Would be nice if you could search by city/region for changes. If you can do that I've missed it.

I too felt the same way with the 2010.2 update and my neighborhood. It's like the joy that Steve Martin's character had in the movie "The Jerk" when he got the new phone book and his name was in it. laugh out loud

Map changes

I have no idea how the map files are formatted, organized, indexed, or keyed, but wouldn't it be nice if there was an intellegent map file compare program which would be able to identify and display any changes by location? Wishful thinking.

I just updated to 2010.30

I just updated to 2010.30 back in November. 2010.40 will have to wait awhile.

Sorry Jack that I was not specific. I meant that I only have 10meg left on the GPS internal memory. I need to go in and see what else is taking up the space. Right now there is very little room in my GPS to upgrade in the future.

I don't know what you had left before the upgrade, my 750 has about 600 Mbit left after my last update. How much memory does your unit have, mine has 2 gig.

The reason I asked which system is because I have noticed that the map update doesn't remove the old map from the computer. I can see running out of HD space after just a few updates.

GPS and Hard Drive Storage Maintenance After Upgrade

[quote=jackj180The reason I asked which system is because I have noticed that the map update doesn't remove the old map from the computer. I can see running out of HD space after just a few updates.

Maintainging storage space on the GPS and the computer hard drive can become a real problem. Several recent posts have advised people to back up the GPS before doing upgrades, and other posts have reported problems with lost or corrupted installs. Now there seem to be issues with upgrade files not replacing out-of-date files.

Although new hard drives are huge and getting less expensive, there is still the problem of clutter. Is anyone aware of a basic list of the critical files on the GPS? Or perhaps an explanation fo what the various files are needed for?

That way people could copy the files from the GPS to their hard drive, and remove unnecessary files from the GPS unit.

You can remove the old maps

You can remove the old maps from your computer using Windows Uninstall from the Control Panel (don't know what a Mac uses). I've been doing this all along. The only maps on my computer are the latest version. Works fine.

Install to GPS removes the old files automatically.

Backup and Clutter. Use the info as a tip and nothing more.

1. I have one DVD full backup of my gps files.
2. Every map upgrade gets put on DVD for safe keeping.
3. Delete voices you don’t use on gps.
4. Only keep a few icon vehicles from Garmin’s Garage on your gps.
5. Only keep most recent map on your mac or pc to reduce clutter.

That’s really it, hope this helps.

I have the lifetime map

I have the lifetime map update service and so far it is 100% perfect and working just fine.

When I update, does Garmin update the POI files and local businesses in their database, or is it just the roads and maps?

When you update your new map you also get the poi updated. I find it best to stick with what poi-factory has to offer.

POIs, too

Built-in POIs are updated with new maps as well as roads, speed limits, etc., etc.

Map vs Memory

I have a 8GB MicroSD chip. I put the most recent 'old' map there and the newest on the GPS.

That way if there's an issue with the new update; fall back to the backup, next newest on the MicroSD. I'd move or copy that one to the GPS.

Note, after loading 2010.40, Nuvi 855 has about 1.3GB left of 3.5GB. My POI and GPX folders have less than 40MB, so the rest are Garmin files.

old map on SD.

Are you able to have both the old and new maps show up on "Map info", such as CN North America 2010.40 and CN North America 2010.30, so you can check or uncheck one or the other as desired? I have played around with this with my 855, copying the old gmapprom.img over to the SD as gmapsupp.img, but I can't get it to show in Map Info. What is the trick to get this to work?

I believe my 660 also has 2 gig of space on its internal drive.

I have also noticed that the installation of a new map does not remove the old maps from your main computer. I have been going to the "Control Panel" and using "Add/Remove Programs" to delete the old maps after installation. I am not having any problem with room on my computer. Just starting to worry about room on the GPS.

Free Space

I made this post in another similar topic and thought I would re-post it here just as a reference.

Gary A wrote:

The new map does overwrite the previous version. Bit each new map is slightly larger than the last. I have been tracking the free space on my 660 since I first bought it.

Here is a post I made in another topic:

For the record, this was the amount of free space on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB

I was able to install the update without having to delete any files.

Depending on which model you have and what you have loaded on it, YMMV.
