yeah ...

and a second plant (in TN I think)is closed for repair ... saw an article on msnbc

however, what's this have to do with poi's and/or gps?? at best this belongs in the chit chat thread.

though ... eggos are pretty important to my kids!! LOL

Eggo

That's it, then. Don't make a POI for Eggo Waffle Plants!!!

Fred

A chance

Now as Alton Brown would say this is a chance to learn to make your own ......

Frozen waffles. Baaaaa.

Ingredients
4 3/4 ounces all-purpose flour, approximately 1 cup
4 3/4 ounces whole-wheat flour, approximately 1 cup
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
3 whole eggs, beaten
2 ounces unsalted butter, melted
16 ounces buttermilk, room temperature
Vegetable spray, for waffle iron
Directions
Preheat waffle iron according to manufacturer's directions.

In a medium bowl whisk together the flours, soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another bowl beat together eggs and melted butter, and then add the buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until combined. Allow to rest for 5 minutes.

Ladle the recommended amount of waffle batter onto the iron according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Close iron top and cook until the waffle is golden on both sides and is easily removed from iron. Serve immediately or keep warm in a 200 degree F oven until ready to serve.

wow.

Very interesting post.

Ok we can bring this into our realm

How many waffles would you need to cover a state like Texas or Idaho?

Lets see how many mathematicians we have here.

Waffle Iron

Every one knows a waffle iron does nothing but iron a waffle.

Not a mathematician, but assuming an Eggo is 4.5" in diameter (don't have one handy so I guessed):
Texas= 5,740,802,709,043,180,000.0
Idaho= 21,355,563,979,775.2

Of course it would be more efficient if we used a 5in x 5in square Belgian waffle so there weren't any unsightly gaps in the coverage:
Texas= 3,610,574,529,403,940,000.0
Idaho= 13,431,197,564,928.0

What do you consider antique?

jackj180 wrote:

Is it what's sold or what's in the store? Some of that which could be considered antique is still moving.

Oh, has anyone noticed you can't buy a waffle iron any more? The only thing available are Belgian style.

Covering Texas and Idaho

I pulled out an old map this morning and was able to cover both states with a single waffle. Of course your coverage will vary with the size of your map and the size of your waffle.

No shortage yet

No shortage in Sam's club. They are well stocked. News reports make is sound like everyone's buying them up and the store freezer shelves are bare. Bought a case just in case. L'eggo my Eggo!

Panic buying

Kind of reminds me of about 20 years ago when Johnny Carson mentioned on the Tonight Show that there was a shortage of toilet paper in the military bases. That remark started a panic buying spree that stripped the stores bare for months. What Johnny was reporting was that manufacturers weren't making a lot of the cheap one-ply "institutional grade" paper as they were busy making the "Ultra-Soft Don't Squeeze my Charmin" type.

These types of slow news days when something that is not a problem but kind of an item of interest sparks a panic. I think the report was not to warn of a "possible shortage" but to report on the precautions Kellogg's was taking to insure the product was safe. But, what we say is often what is not heard.

Yeah, now if you want a 'classic' iron they cost more..if you can find one. I'm surprised they don't call it 'retro.'

What surprises me is that anyone would pay the premium to buy frozen waffles or pancakes. They taste like cardboard to me. I'll do without if that's all there is but they must sell well. My local grocery store has one whole freezer (about 25 foot long) dedicated to frozen entries and meals.

I think the only difference between Belgian style and American style waffles is that one is round and the other is square - you figure out which one is round.

I wish I could find a good

I wish I could find a good waffle iron like my grandmother had.

It's all in the batter

jackj180 wrote:

Actually, it's in the batter... Regular waffles are made with a batter leavened with baking powder while Belgian waffles are made with a batter leavened with yeast.

A "Belgian" waffle iron has bigger pockets than an American one. Shape has nothing to do with it.

What's an Eggo?

Gary A wrote:

I don't believe I've EVER had a waffle that wasn't home made. I was amazed one time when visiting someone who wanted to have pancakes or waffles for breakfast but said she couldn't do it since she didn't have any Eggo waffles or Krusteaz pancake mix. I kind of freaked out. I whipped up a batch of batter in a very short time. It amazes me that people don't know how to cook the simplest things anymore. How sad.

The current day idea of "cooking" seems to be limited to what can be nuked in a microwave. Cooking from scratch is a dying artform.

I stand corrected.

I don't think I have ever had a Belgian waffle. I wonder what kind of yeast they use, it only takes me about 3 or 4 minutes to cook a regular waffle. I wouldn't think that would be enough time for yeast to rise.

Oh well, live and learn. Today wasn't wasted after all.
