Interesting feature.... Bug or mis-cue on my attempt?

Nuvi 660 with all updates.

Just got back from week in NC, 17 miles from the I40 rockslide that has closed I40.

Our destination was east of rockslide, and we live west of rockslide.... We took mountain roads to get there, and decided we'd try somthing else going back.

In order not to hear "Recalculating" and requsts for U turns toward the rockslide... We created a new favorite... to the junction of I26 and I81... then,

We recalled our Home.. which would normally route us westbound on I40 (to the closed rockslide).. Then, we recalled the new favorite to the junction of I26 & I81, and said it was a Waypoint.....

WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!! Except...

Then I tried to save it as a new favorite.... and all it saved was from where we were at the time (1/2 mile off the Garmin maps -- We were on top of a mountain at the time) to the junction of I26 & I81.

Prior to the save as favorite it DID SHOW the route to Home with the waypont around the rockslide... But after it was saved, all it showed was from where we were to the junction of I26 & I81...

Never was able to save it correctly.... But I could recall Home, then recall the I26/I81 junction favorite, and apply it as a waypoint, and that would work perfectly.... even with power cycles!!!

WHY? Bug or Mistake on my part???

P.S. on this.... I tried saving this multiple times, and all that ever got saved was the waypoint, not the destination with the waypoint re-direction.....

All you can save on the 660 are favorites.

Favorites are the locations (as you correctly described them, waypoints) that come up either as the result of a search or by tapping the map and telling the device to save the location.

You cannot save a route on the 660.

660

OK... It wasn't clear in the flip chart I had with me..... At least I found a work-around....

I don't believe that traffic subscription would have helped, as the closest city that may have had a station to transmit from would be Ashville, which is 40+ miles (and a couple mountains) east. Knoxville would be 80 miles west (and maybe 5 mountain peaks)....

I didn't try it, but are you limited to one waypoint, or could you add more? They held through power downs for lunch, gas, etc.

Not sure what you mean about traffic - the original question had to do with routes . . .

If you are navigating, the current route will remain active, even through powerdowns until you either clear it (by pressing the res stopsign 'x' on the main menu) or arrive at the final destination.

You can add via points (I believe as many as 20) to your trip by selecting a new destination while actively navigating to your terminal destination.

Look up the new address, co-ordinate or POI, tap 'Go' and then answer the question about whether it is a new destination or not.

Via's will be ordered in the most efficient manner possible. The final destination will always be 'last'.

I was wondering if traffic

I was wondering if traffic might have helped in this situation... as an alternate work-around.

Good to know more in depth information.... Thanks.

Could have just used an avoidance to "avoid" interstates, which would have taken him around the rockslide to home. That is what I use to get to my daughters in Atlanta during holiday travel (when you don't dare use I-75). Just a thought, anyway.

From our house, Normally we use: I94 to I65, I65 to I64, I64 to I75, I75 to I40, and exit at I40 exit 20 in NC.

In the case of the I40 Rockslide, I used:

I94 to I65, I65 to I64, I64 to I75, I75 to I40, I40
to I81, I81 to US19/I26, US19/I26 to I40 (now east of rockslide by ashville ~ exit 46... and I40 west back to exit 20....

As you can see, using an avoidance to avoid interstates just wouldn't work....

Gotcha... Sorry, I thought you were travelling I-40 from home to destination. Had that been the case, my solution would have worked for ya........ You could have avoided the rockslide by using the avoidance until you were East or West of rockslide to get you around it.

Cheers.......Joel

Detour

My Nuvi 750 has a detour button. Does your GPS? I used it when a road was closed and it worked great.

Detour

Mgarledge, I think all the nuvi's have the detour capability when navigating a route. It is a useful feature that I think is often overlooked.

The detour button is great when you suddenly find a problem in an existing route, but since the OP knew the problem in advance it's better to plan the route around it. That way you can get a shorter route (if one exists) than driving to the problem area and changing from there.

That sounds good

Sounds good. I have only used it in a suddenly found problem. Didn't know they knew about it ahead of time. Guess I didn't listen to the news.
