2009 Garmin Update Problem

I know someone mentioned this in a previous discussion about this update, but that was 27 pages long, and I'm lazy. (Heck, that's why I have a GPS, right?)

So when installing the 2009 Map Update, the app told me that my unit didn't have sufficient memory to install the entire lower 48 states. What gives?? I have an empty 2GB SD card in the thing -- will it not utilize that for storage? I've already removed all of my pictures, the extra language files, etc. Surely they didn't add THAT much extra map content from 08 to 09, did they?

Check the memory usage of your Garmin device.

I believe the map update will try to install on the Garmin memory, not the SD card that is installed in the Garmin.

Check the space usage on the Garmin device by displaying the properties using Windows File Explorer. Right click on the Garmin device and click on file properties. This will show the memory usage of the Garmin.

The SD card should also be displayed using Windows File Explorer. It will be listed as the next drive in Windows File Explorer just below the Gamin device.

Perhaps you will need to remove large items that you have placed onto the Garmin device itself. Uncompressed maps or Software executables etc. to have enough room for the map update.

Download the map to your harddrive, then install it.

I almost forgot....

Download the map update to your computer. The file I recently downloaded for my free map update (with my new nuvi) was almost 2Gig in size.

Insure your Garmin is connected to the computer. Double click on the downloaded file and it will locate your device and install the map update, provided there is enough room on the actual Garmin device (not the SD card).

Things to delete

Getting rid of the extra speech files, custom vehicle files, and remove the custom POI file may give you enough room to install the map update. Reinstall the POIs on the SD card.

It's refreshing to see someone else that doesn't take themselves too seriously. Thanks for making me laugh.

I downloaded the file, but during installation, the PC froze and I had to try to install again. This happened a few times and now I find that the memory on my Hardrive is almost zero! and I can't locate where the memory has gone.
I've still yet to update the GPS too.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob

Garmin uses the C: drive to extract and temporarily store the files from the .RAR archive (which the installer is packaged with), then runs the map setup from the C: drive, builds the mapset and stores it on the C: drive before sending it to the nuvi...VERY BAD. If you have a small C: drive and tons of space on anything but C: (like on D:, E:, etc.), Garmin simply will not use it for the installation. It puts EVERYTHING on C:. This is a serious problem which Garmin seems to not care about nor be bothered with since it has been the same since the first downloadable map update was released.

See if you can find temporary files used in the Garmin install process and delete those files. Windows Disk Cleanup may help here (or perhaps a freeware disk cleanup utility). Use it to clear out all temporary files on your C: drive.

Afterwards, download/install WinRAR or 7-Zip (use Google to find these) and use one of those apps to pre-decompress the files contained in the Garmin install package to another hard drive on your system (internal or external, or even burn to a DVD). Then run the installation from that folder.

Assuming WinXP, it should be located at the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\GARMIN

and internet explorer temp files
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

In addition to the above, old (or all) restore points may be deleted. That alone can free up GBs of space especially if they are never purged.
