How do you use Garmin POI Loader to create TourGuides?

Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me how do you use Garmin POI Loader to create TourGuides?

Before using POI Loader I have been using the Geovative.com web site to create groups of poi's and let the Geovative.com softwere convert them to separate .gpi files.

In my Garmin 755T these are show as Tourguides and work like them but when I tried to use POI Loader it stores everything as POI.GPI and that file is not recognized in the Garmin as a Tourguide. Can you tell me what I did wrong?

I'm also using a nice program called Extra POI Editor to create the Tourguides without using the Geovative.com web site and everything looks great in the program. When I try to load the .gpx file in POI Loader it does not create a Tourguide. It only creates a poi.gpi that acts like it's a speed camera poi and makes the Garmin see it only if I am driving on the same road as the POI.

Any help or a tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

Truly,
Emad

You get the radius alert

To get the radius alert instead of along the road you need to add TourGuide to the title of the custom poi,bmp and mp3.Example

TourGuide Places to visit.gpx
TourGuide Places to visit.bmp
TourGuide Places to visit.mp3

See Poi Factory post http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13958

Poiloader converts the csv or gpx file to a gpi file.

Edit.Using Extra Poi Editor if you plan to set the distance the same for each location you can take advantage of replace all .Select from your computer the file you want to build the alert distance for. Then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance in ft you want for the alert. Then click replace all. You now have alert distance set for each custom poi. Then save as gpx file.

You get the radius alert

Thanks Charles,

I'll give it a try.

One more suggestion

When adding TourGuide to the file name, add it at the end before .csv / .gpx. I do this because I want to read the tourguide name (Offbeat Tourist Attractions Tourguide) not the word tourguide (TourGuide Offbeat Tourist Attractions).

Hi,

Still could not get it to be a real tourguide even using a name like my_poi_group_TourGuide.gpi

Still acts like it's a speed camera poi.

Thanks for trying.

Looks like I need to stick with the gpi files that geovative.com creates.

Unless a different proximity is set, the keyword TourGuide sets a default 400 meter or 1/4 mile distance. This is a problem with CSV files as they must be loaded in manual mode in order to change the default. Camera files also default to the 1/4 mile, 400 meter distance as well.

A GPX can have different proximity values for each entry as it is an element in the XML code for the POI.

Check the help file for POI Loader for a listing of all the keywords and their affect on the file containing the keyword.

Making TourGuides

You do not use PoiLoader to make TourGuides !!!!!!!

PoiLoader only loads the already made Tourguides.
PoiLoader can be used to set a custom proximity alert for .csv TourGuides (Manual Mode).

You USE Garmin's MapSource to produce .GPX TourGuides, with this method you can pre-set the proximity alert during the making of the TourGuide and load it into the Garmin using the Express Method in PoiLoader.

I use csv files for proximity alerts and gxp files for an improved quality proximity alerts (allows individual photos, sound bit comment, or music).

Run POI-Loader in manual mode and set proximity to 10,000 ft (approx 2 miles). I get annoucements for all sorts of attractions that are off my route.

TourGuide Name

When using a name like " my_poi_group_TourGuide " It seems to me that the computer is recognizing the name as ONE WORD !!. I think you will have to separate the word TourGuide so the computer see it as a separate word. Such as " my_poi_group TourGuide.csv/gpx "

tourguide name

Here's a valid tourguide name I used:

TourGuide-Mongolfiere.gpx

TourGuide

I love use the file "OffBeat Tourist Attractions_Tourguide.gpx", with a mp3 I made saying "There is a off beat tourist attraction in the area". Works fine this way as a 2 mile radius proximity. Then I use it again as a regular file "Offbeat Tourist Attractions.gpx", as a regular alert file to show me exactly where it is, with bmp and mp3 of the same name. Yea, it cries out a little more, but i am conservative with the distances, so as to not get too bothered.

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

I use my file name exactly as yours without the underscore in file name, works fine for me. I also use 2 miles proximity as alert. No need to to load this file twice you can look up attractions same as any other file group.
