Displaying Speed Limits on nuvi 855

I understand that the 855 has the capability of showing the speed limit for certain highways. So far I have not experienced this in practise. Perhaps it's because the unit does not have Canadian speed limits programmed into it.
Two questions.
How does the 855 display speed limit?
Can I add speed limits for Canadian roads?

Speed Display

cool
As long as you have North America or w/Canada MAPS...the speed indicator should display on the left-hand side of your display. About 85% of America highways are covered... Not sure on Canada highways??? Works GREAT on my 780.
Contact GARMIN to get Canada maps if needed.

Never see speed limits in Canada

I have a Nuvi 255W and have never seen speed limits in Canada, yet it often displays them in the USA. I just don't think Canada maps include speed limits yet. On my Nuvi there is no way to enable or disable them.

You can see how the Nuvi display speed limits by setting it in Simulation mode. Tools > Settings > System > GPS Simulator On. Then go back to the main screen Where To > scroll down to Cities and enter any large US city > Map > Set Loc. Then plot a route that takes you on a main road or hwy, tap Yes when it asks if you want to simulate the route and you will see the speed limit on the lower left of the screen.

Check this site for more info... search on Speed Limit or Simulator.

OK thanks. No I've never seen that display. Looking forward to see if it helps on my way to Florida.

The speed limit display is not always that accurate as it does not incorporate any recent changes. I wouldn't rely on it being the "gospel truth."

855 displays speed limits for secondary roads

I have a 855 and the speed limit is displayed even for secondary roads. This is for the 2010.20 CN_NT_NA maps that includes Canada, Mexico & Puerto Rico.

.

The speed limit display is dependent on the area and the speed limit info is embedded in the maps. If a road is not covered, it is because it's not contained in the map data. Just like Lane Assist and Junction View, the coverage should get better over time. Going by user reports in various other forums, Canada is still lacking in many areas as far as the speed limit data goes.

Speed display

is a great tool -- and the accuracy is quite good.

better than guessing

Based on a couple of hours usage around Albuquerque, I've so far seen speed limit display not available on the lowest level residential roads, but always there on major streets, frontage roads, and the freeway. So far the accuracy has been quite good.

I'd say that relying on it as better than your guess when you have not seen a sign recently, so long as it fits the actual road and conditions, is probably a plus all round.

Other locations may vary. (lane assist does not seem to exist here in Albuquerque yet, let alone junction view--my 855 with the latest update map did not show any while making a left turn on the major interstate intersection near the center of town today--the Big I to locals).
