Campgrounds

I am developing poi files listing the campgrounds in the "Coast to Coast" Camp Resort 2007 Directory. I would like to know whether anyone is interested in these files.

I am too young (age 35) to be able to visit camp grounds. Wait until I am retired and you can bet that I will be! However, I am sure that there are ppl here that would be, dont stop creating just cause there might be no interest. Tomorrow might be the day that someone REALLY wants it.

Campgrounds

I started working on a list of Passport America, the data I used was wrong. I would like to have that list, or better info. There are a lot of us that would like all camping poi's

I d/l'd a Passport America

I d/l'd a Passport America file from here. Was it yours? If so I'll delete it. If not you should look for it.

Pffft, are you kidding man? I am 35 too and I could LIVE on a campsite for an indefinite amount of time razz. I think camping is the only time I am completely calm now days.

I'm the opposite. I used to camp a lot when I was younger.

Now, I prefer to have creature comforts when I travel. I love nature and like getting out in it, but at the end of the day, I want a real bed and a hot shower. ;0

EDIT: I can't believe I responded to an old thread. Sorry about that.

Yes We would love it.

My wife and I have been full-timers for 9 years now, and know of many who have been at it for 20+ years. We love it, and would never own a house again - to much work. Of course, RV's and vehicles require work as well. We have been to many wonderful and beautiful places in this country, but feel we can spend a lifetime and not see it all. We have made friends with so many people and can't wait to make more. We've volunteer in some of the most beautiful spots and enjoyed wildlife and scenery that few get to see. The only drawback at times has been getting lost (why we now have a GPS), but sometimes that has led to very interesting places that we would never had seen otherwise. We're sure you'll love the lifestyle. Happy trails...

Yes please

Yes please send them to me!!!!!

Thanks

Here's the campground page. (There are actually 3 pages there.)

And remember you can always browse the category list.

And the alphabetical list.

Coast to Coast Campgrounds...

POI's are already available I believe. The Files are listed under the POI Campground category. You could check out the POI on this page to determine if what you want to do has already been done. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2757

Campgrounds downloads

I've already downloaded Coast to Coast, GNP (Good Neighbor parks), and Passport America from this site. Thank you, whovever is responsible for those. They are membership parks, so the list will change every year and will hopefully be updated. There are thousands of other parks which do not require membership. Trailer Life and Woodall's are good sources for those. Maybe someone will get them into GPS file format.

"RV parks" is the term most often used for these. Most of the county, state and federal parks have "campgrounds" because they allow tents. You don't give up comforts in RV's. Right now I am writing this from an RV with a satellite internet connection, Direct TV, fireplace, two TV's (one is 27"), microwave, two air conditioners, queen size bed, generator, and two computers.

I am presently working on the update to those files and will be uploading them in the near future. I just completed the update for "Best Parks of America" and it is now available for download. Just go to the category campgrounds for the download.

Boy Scout Camps

I think a POI listing of all the scout camps would be a great project. A KML file for Google Earth would be fun, as well. There are hundreds of scout camps - mostly located in remote locations.

There is a poi for US based Boy Scout Camps. Currently there are about 332 camps listed. If any locations are missing/wrong, just let me know and I will get the updates in.

Camping & GPS - a logical combo!

We've gone the tent - VW camper - Airstream trailer pattern over the years as the bones get older and the travel patterns change but GPS is new to us. Campground POIs will be GREAT because we always travel too far in a day without knowing EXACTLY where we will end up! Having a large Campground POI database will take some of the angst out of end-of-day searches for a place to lay our heads!!

Thanks to everyone for all the work that has been completed already!!!

Why don't the big campground operators provide thier own POI's?

Just bought a Garmin and am loading as much info as possible. I'll look for your POI's soon. On a related matter, I can't understand why KOA and other campground providers won't provide their own POI files for downloading. You think they would only be too willing to make it easy for us to find their campgrounds while travelling. If I know where they are, I might just go stay at one of their campgrounds someday. Rocket science, you say?

Right On!

I couldn't agree with you more. See my other comment today. I would sure like to see a really comprehensive POI file assembled by all campground operators together and made available for FREE. That way we'll come and stay at their campgrounds.

Campgrounds

As posted above there are a number of poi's for campgrounds in the poi listing. Look under camping, and there is also one for all of the KOA's in the usa and canada. More than you could ever stay at in a life time.

I recently started to maintain this file that was out of date. It's a big undertaking, some campgrounds have gone under with the economy taking its toll on the RV industry. Some have been converted to trailer parks which aren't what campers and travelers are looking for. As time permits, I have been weeding out duplicate entries, correcting coordinates and adding new ones as I find them. Others can help by sending me any additions or corrections they find as they travel about.

Note: RV Parks typically cater to wheeled RVs only, Campgrounds typically support both RVs and tenters alike. Most sites include phone numbers and I would recommend calling ahead to verify if they have a site to fill your needs whether it be a 40' pusher or a pup tent.

There are other listings here at the POI Factory that are specific to KOA, Good Sam, BLM, etc. If space isn't tight, it might be good to download them all if you are planning a road trip and want to touch all bases.

The only reason I can think of is that some are slow to adapt to the available technology. It was only a few years ago that a handful of us had portable GPSr units, now they come built in on some model cars and high end RVs.

If you search for a particular RV Park/Campground and they have their own website, they often will have their coordinates posted on the site. As for the affiliated chains such as KOA as you mentioned, I have to agree that they are missing the boat by not publishing a POI file in the common formats on the page for their locations.

I see where the 2010 Trailer Life Directory is advertising that it will include coordinates in the listings. That is a step in the right direction. If that is available, they should also offer the POI file at least to those who purchase the directory IMO.

Campgrounds

That comment was generated a couple of years ago. Since that time, a number of campground files has been generated by members of this community. The ones that I was referring too, were membership campgounds associated with Coast to Coast. These are available for download from this site. See

What about areas with natural Hot Springs?

Campground files

Look at previous comments on this subject. There are a number of campground files available from this site.

I just redid the Thousand

I just redid the Thousand Trail-Naco-Leisure Time Resorts file. There are 59 sites listed and that creates a problem for Garmin GPS's like mine (855)... It will only display the first 50. So if I'm in California and I want to go to Vermont, it doesn't even show up. To correct this problem, I've broken the file into two parts; TT-N-LTR-West.gpx & TT-N-LTR-East.gpx, the dividing line is the Mississippi River.

No need to split the file, that creates a possible unintended consequence: You're in Tenn and want a list of nearby Thousand Trail locations, those on the other side of the river in Arkansas are now invisible.

Assuming you are RVing from Calif to Vermont, you would likely stay at locations en route, as you leave the west coast, more of the east coast comes into view. Assuming you simply wanted to find a location in Vermont ahead of time to make advance reservations, then try this:

Create a route to Burlington, VT. Once done, then do another Where to?, Near..., My Destination. Select your Thousand Trail file and voila, it lists those 1st 50, but all starting with Burlington and working outwards.

Did you try telling the unit you wanted to search near someplace like Manchester? It would have appeared then.

Can you put the files on the POI factory list of files so that people can download them.

I am looking for a list of private and public RV North East campgrounds.

Campground files

Look at my comment dated 12/25/2009. This provides a listing of the campgrounds that I referred too when I initially opened this subject back in 2007. If you have any questions, let me know.

Combined Campground packages

I noticed that there are now TWO different POI packages for Campground Combined.

Campgrounds and RV Parks Combined

COMBINED US Campgrounds by rivopom

Are these the same thing? If not, is there any chance of the owners getting together and combining them for one better POI package?

Also

There is also one for campgrounds that cater to motorcyclists.

I found that opening the page with all of the available files listed and using the "find" function in the browser helps me find files I am looking for.

I found many duplicates in the COMBINED by rivopom. I like what he/she is doing but why did I find so many dupes when I opened it in my GPS? Thanks.

Needs careful Checking

I did a file for Campgrounds in Southern Ontario. I found that the addresses that were provided by the campground to their association did not Geo Code well. In many cases they used postal codes and others used the city name as they knew it, but the GPS was using a county or township name.

I had to look at their own website and try to interpret the often sketchy directions or map that they had in their website. In a number of cases, they didn't design the directions from the perspective of someone that is a complete stranger to their area or the map was a Google Map link that used the same poor addressing that they had on the camping brochure.

Good luck.

It's available along with many others as a pushpin set for Streets & Trips from

http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/2595-poi-mega-file-pushpin-col...

The file is pretty basic, it gives a name with city & state/prov and coordinates only. No streets or phone numbers. You need Microsoft Streets& Trips where you can then load the Mega File and then extract just the sets you want to a GPX file.
