Red Light Camera?

I have noticed recently in Calgary Alberta, along Elbow Drive in the Lower Mount Royal area, mounted to the traffic light standards around Sifton Blvd, there are occasionally small blue flashing lights that go soild blue. I am wondering if this is a speed senser for a camera. Does anyone know what they are? WR Dave

.

Usually, there are signs posted as you approach a monitored intersection. I've also found articles in the local news (TV & newspapers) when new cameras go into operation.

A key point is where the camera is located. It has to be located back from the intersection, pointed towards the intersection in order to capture a photo of cars as they pass through. Cameras mounted near the traffic signals themselves pointed at approaching cars are not enforcement cameras.

Have you seen these pictures?

Blue lights

Those are for public transit buses, and emergency vehicles to be able to change the lights before getting to them.

Check your local PD website

Often you can find the locations of all red light cameras in your city by checking your local police department's web site.

Most police departments publish this information.

That make the most sense as the last time I saw it working was when a transit bus was roling up and the blue light started flashing rapidly. Thanks for the reply.-- WR Dave

Signs before the camera?

Does there always have to be a sign posted before the cameras appear? I have been trying to watch for the signs in our area. I usually see two signs before the camera, but not always.

Not always

In MD you normally will see a Photo Enforced sign below the speed limit sign approaching a camera location. However, I think the state law gives a little leeway on that but I'm not certain.
