Specific Avoidances?

Does anyone know if there's a way to specifically avoid a point on your route? For example, I was in NYC a few times this summer and each time on the way home I was routed through the Holland Tunnel. Anyone who's ever driven through the Holland will probably agree with me, it's a time sucker, easily adding an hour or more to your trip just because of the time it takes to get across Manhattan and into the tunnel. I would much rather take a circuitous route around the tunnel and avoid that mess altogether.

Not to mention, I was driving a big box truck with propane tanks in the back, which I come to find out later that that's not allowed in any NYC tunnels. I was fortunate not to get caught with them.

.

You could set a waypoint to force the unit to route you in a different direction.

Waypoint

This is how I do it on routes that I take a lot, but want to go the way I want instead of the route the GPS wants. I put the Waypoint in 'Favorites' and either select that as a destination or utilize it as a via in a route.

Custom Avoids

The Nuvi 8x0/8x5 series has a Custom Avoids Section which allows the user to set avoidances for individual roads and areas (rectangle.

For the road part it allows you to place a start and end point in a road which tells the gps to not use that portion of the road in making routes. On divided roads such as Interstates or major highways you have to place the start and stop points in both directions.

Once set you can enable or disable these avoids as you see fit per occasion.

Tool>Settings>Navigation>Avoidances>Custom Avoids

Thanks Hannah, that's kind

Thanks Hannah, that's kind of what I was looking for. I just wish I had a way of doing it with my existing GPSr rather than requiring a different model. But of course, that's what I've come to expect with most gadgets unfortunately.

EDJ has the answer

If your unit allows you to route to another waypoint and use it as a via, set a point on your preferred route that is away from the tunnel. Then, after selecting your destination, "goto" the other waypoint and choose "Via" instead of as a new destination.

If your unit doesn't have the "Via" routing option, you can still do this manually by selecting the intermediate waypoint first and when you arrive there, "goto" your final destination.

Or of course you can just keep driving along your preferred route and ignore the directions until you're well past the tunnel. The routing will continue to update until the fastest route (or shortest distance, or whatever setting you have selected) no longer uses the tunnel as the correct route. Maybe not the most elegant solutions, but certainly less expensive than buying a new unit just to get this one feature.
