Question for TurboCC about GUpdateMod

Hi,

I'd like to silence the audio feedback "beep" one gets on a nuvi 750. Unfortunately Garmin does not offer the option.

GUpdateMod looks like it may do the trick. Wav 5 appears to be the sound, so I modified the file to silence it. When testing the revised GUPDATE.GCD file using GUpdateMod, it is indeed silent. All characteristics of the revised wav file except for the size are identical.

My problem is that after transferring the file to the GPS and rebooting, the GPS doesn't recognize that the GUPDATE.GCD file has changed. The file I modified is v4.80. Both the original and the modified file are the same size and a file compare utility also thinks that they are the same.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Bob

GUpdateMod

Hi BobHy,

All you say seems true and good, except the part where you say that the modified GUPDATE.GCD file and the original are the same and the GPS does not recognize it.

When the GPS does not recognize the file, it is because it has not been modified properly. Then, how come it is the same as the original? Did you use a text file compare or a binary file compare?

I think you did not compare the 2 files correctly. I think GUpdateMod modified the .GCD file, but incorrectly for some reasons. I'll try to download v4.80 (I am still at 3.10 smile )and see what is wrong.

GUpdateMod

Well, neither the GPS nor the file compare utility recognize a difference in the files. The GPS either does not recognize the revised version of GUpdate or does not recognize that it is different than already installed firmware.

Listening to the 5wave sound using GUpdateMod:
1. produces a tone with the unmodified GUpdate.gcd.
2. produces no sound with the modified GUpdate.gcd.
Therefore the before and after files have to be different.

Perhaps what must be done is to first install an old version of firmware into the GPS, then update that with the modified v4.80 file.

By the way, thank you very much for the utilities you have written and made available. I've made use TTS editor for its ability to get rid of "recalculating" everytime I purposely stray from the route.

I found that saying "recalculating" to be very annoying as I do that beep that sounds every time some input action is taken on the GPS.

Hi Bob,

According to the instructions supplied, you have to revert to a different version before you can install the modified version. It is a bit annoying and it takes twice the time.

I am still puzzled by the fact your file compare says they are the same...

Downgrade and then upgrade and tell me if it works. If the gps says corrupted software, then it does not work. You can copy the original newer GUPDATE.GCD and restart the gps to upgrade.

Let me know.

GUpdateMod

Hi TurboCC,

I downgraded to 4.60, then installed the revised 4.80. Unfortunately, it looks like the source of the beep is something other than 5wave. The beep is still there.

I did retest the Gupdate file on the GPS; 5wave is silent.

I'd just love to be rid of that beep. The setup on my 76csx does offer such an option.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Beeps

GUPDATE.GCD has 5 waves. One of them does the dong-dong alarm for camera. I changes the five of them to "one", "two", ''', "five" but I can still hear some beeps sometimes. For example, the keyboard "clicks". It seems there are other sounds that are not WAV files or identified as such. Maybe the beep you are looking for cannot be changed.
