GTM -20

I just canceled my MSN Direct subscription and need to replace the cable with an FM receiver type. I'm looking at eBay and see that some GTM-20's are set up to receive Navteq and others are set up for Clear Channel. Which is better? I live in the greater NYC area. I also spend time in Montreal and Orlando/Daytona Beach area.
Thanks in advance for your input!

go to the garmin site and look for traffic subscriptions

If you go to the garmin site and look for traffic subscriptions they will have information on both with links to the coverage areas for each. At this point Clear Channel seems to have the most cities covered.

Keep in mind either one can be added to the receiver at a later date and my GTM 20 FM receiver has both services lifetime.

Also remember that even though you canceled your MSN service the receiver itself is still going to work with service untill 1/1/2012 for free.

I wasn't offered the

I wasn't offered the continuation of MSN service when I canceled. I saw most posters in the MSN Direct topic got the offer. I'll check this weekend and see if it's still working.

How do you get both services on one receiver? Do you register the product code/serial # of the receiver with both providers?

Thanks for your input.

GTM-20 and Nuvi 855

Sorry to jump in this thread ... I just got a Nuvi 855 as a gift from a friend. I want to add traffic to this. I see that the compatible GTM-20 receiver is Part # 010-00544-13. I am thinking of purchasing this from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Lifetime-Traffic-Receiver-Selec...).

I called Garmin and asked about the compatibility with my Nuvi 855 and the support person said its compatable, however I need to purchase a traffic subscription. The Amazon page indicates that this receiver has Lifetime free subscription to traffic-information service. Do I really need to purchase a traffic subscription?

Traffic subscription

In order to get access to the traffic updates, you have to enter a subscription code. I would wait to see what arrives from amazon before you purchase a traffic subscription.
Once you enter the subscription code, you can check the duration of your subscription.
Hope it is lifetime. smile

Coverage

Look also at the coverage maps for your area or cities you frequent. My GPS has free Navteq but Clear Channel covered the cities I am in but Navteq did not. I bought the Clear Channel lifetime and now have both on one receiver. I do not get any ads either.

Just to clarify. My 760 was

Just to clarify. My 760 was stolen about a month ago and I replaced it with a 765. Here is the deal. Any GTM20 will receive ClearChannel and/or NAVTEC FM with a subscription . If you get a new GTM20, then free NAVTEC, with ads, is included. The free NAVTEC and ads are in the receiver/power cord - not the GPS. Just to prove it, I updated the software on two older C580s and attached the new cord from my 765. Both get the free NAVTEC traffic and have pop-up ads.

I have been though it all. When I got the C580, MSN was the only provider in my area. By the time I got a 760, ClearChannel had been added. By the time I had to replace the 760, we now had NAVTEC. I ordered the 765 rather than another 760 because the 760 plus ClearChannel lifetime was more $ than a 765.

If you have NAVTEC in your area, get the new cord and go. The new cord has a small box in the power cord about .5" by 2.5" about 4" down from the GPS connection. The older cord has the receive indicator lights in the lighter adapter. Both styles are on eBay and Amazon so be careful.

By the way, the pop-up ads are also unnoticed. So far in the 3-4 weeks,I have had the same hotel chain ad everytime.

You just input the code for the additional service

Thanks for your input.

You just input the code that you are given when you register for the additional service in the traffic add service menu and it will show as a additional traffic service when you check.

Only one service can be used at any one time but the unit checks and uses the best choice at that moment for the area when you start it up.
