Setting proximity alerts

I have a Garmin nuvi 760 and have read a lot of the posts on this forum. My nuvi760 only allows me to turn on/off the Proximity alerts... I have no known way to set the distance at which it warns me. Several times a year I make a Trek from TX to NJ and need to know where the Interstate Rest Stops are? I am looking for at least a 2-5 mile warning if Rest Stops before me

Not a problem

Download the reststop POI and set your alert distance to 16000 ft. and you will have aprox a 3 mile warning.

Proximity Alerts

Perhaps you did not undstand the my post. I cannot set the distance for the alert to warm me. The nuvi 760 only allows the proximity alert to ne turned On or Off...

You must use

You must use POI Loader in the "manual mode" to set the distance as you upload to your GPS. In extensive trials around the country I have found that using 5555 ft. (easier to type) is adequate for Rest ARea notification.

Read the following from Gary Hayman. Very educational. http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.htm#poi...

Use POILoader Manual Mode

The distance setting is in the POI Loader software when you load the POI files. Set POILoader for manual mode and then you can set the distance that you want on a per-file basis.

Proximity Alerts distance?

What do you think is a good distance to put for the proximity alerts?

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.

It depends on your own preference

For rest areas and tolls I have it set at 2 miles. Favorite restaurants at 1/2 mile, campgrounds at 1 mile. State lines and highpoints at 500ft.

what about red light

what about red light cameras? I want to be warned in advanced but not to far in advanced that would cause me to drive slower than needed while anticipating a camera.

Red Light Cameras

I have mine set at 1400 feet. Seems to be enough time to slow down but not so far away to cause numerous repeated warnings.

Default

When I install an updated file, I let it default to the 1/4 mile alert distance.
