Nuvi 255 noob...latest maps and question about turn notifications

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the site. I just bought a Nuvi 255 and I was just wondering if anyone knows when the next map update will be released. I think I get the 60-day NuMaps guarantee and didn't want to waste it on an old version smile

Also, is there a way to change the number of feet before the TTS notifies you to turn? For example, instead of "turn right in 1 mile on _____" and then "turn right" it could have a notification in-between that says "turn right on ____ in 500 feet"?

Thanks a bunch!

Welcome aboard

Concerning your first question you can take a look at this thread

and the answer to your second question unfortunately is no.

Cheers

Thank you!

Thank you for your response I tried to search for "map update" etc, didn't come up with anything - thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

As for the second part, that's very unfortunate - that has always been a pet peeve of mine since I had my first Garmin c330 sad

I guess once you get used to it it's not too bad, but it just seems like a simple option Garmin could include - oh well.

Thanks again!

Turn notifications

My 265T tells me at 1 mile, .5 and again at .2 miles. My previous GPA ran on a Dell pocket PC that had a slider type meter for the last 100 feet or so. Could not get any updates for the Dell since Dell no longer market's pocket PC's anymore and newer maps.

255W update

I just updated yesterday. It is the 2010 update. Not much should be happening in the next 60 days. I think you can do a reload before the 60 days is up, but I am not absolutely sure.

The Nuvi did not have my road on it and now it does after the update. I would just go ahead with the update. It took about 3 hours to download from the site then upload to the nuvi. I like the update more than the original maps and they are much more complete. I think the old maps were a standard mfg oem that is way out of date and when you update you are sooooo happy to see all the updates.

There is a 2010.10 update and a 2010.20 update.

There is a 2010.10 update and a 2010.20 update. What the difference is between the .10 and .20 updates are - I don't know. It is rumored that Garmin will put out another update (2010.30) within 30-60 days. "silent636" didn't say which map software was already in his Nuvi 255, so it's hard to advise if there is a newer map update available for his unit.

Politicians and Diapers must be changed often for the exact same reason...

You will notice the distance

You will notice the distance it FIRST notifies you to turn is based on your speed (or maybe the time it predicts to the turn) but anyway it is not a set thing

Distance to turns

to clarify bokone's comments, they're right, the turn is based on speed HOWEVER, it is the Garmin POSTED speed and not your actual speed. For instance if the turn shows at 1.5mi it is predicated on your travelling at 60mph on a 60mph highway. If you travel at 100mph on a 60mph highway, the turn will still show at 1.5 miles. Conversely if you travel on a 60mph highway at 30mph the turn will show at 1.5 miles and then count down.

(Foregoing is example only and please others do not correct me that the turn at 60mph is 1.75 miles or something else!)

On higher speed roads you may get a couple of warnings before the turn whereas on slower speed roads you may only get one warning. (I usually try and glance at lower right of screen for how far to next turn and I also look at the tulip diagrams of turns - I use a nuvi 360)

These settings cannot, in my understanding, be changed.

Hope this helps!
