Greenville program suspended

Greenville, NC has suspended their red light programs, and Charlotte is now thinking about suspending theirs also. If you live in Charlotte and they turn off your cameras, please let us know so we can take them out of the database.

The price of bureaucratic greed

Hopefully all of the NC cameras will be turned off, including those in Wilmington where I call home.

Turns out that something like 90% of the $ from fines was going to the camera company by way of the contract written. Also turns out, after a lawsuit was filed and won, that state law says that 90% of such fines are supposed to go to public schools. Not even bureaucrats can figure out how to do creative financing to make those numbers work.

Score one for common sense and the little guy.

If I hear that other NC cities are getting in line with the legal precedent, I'll let you know Miss POI.

wife got bagged

Hey MissPOI, my wife got bagged by one on 74 last year. Wish I had known then what I know now, and I would have disputed the ticket.

Do you know if they've removed them yet? I live up on Lake Norman and am in Charlotte all the time.

Charlotte, NC ( Red Light Program )

Hi Miss poi,

I live in The Charlotte area and I believe that Charlotte has abandoned their Red Light Program. I've notice lately that my radar detector is quiet when I pass through intersections where the cameras are set up. Before my detector would alert full blast as I approached the intersection.

I have been told by someone that works for the city that
they have been turn off and more then likely will discontinue the program completely. I spoke to him in March and he stated just as the Article below, that they were in wake of a Court Ruling that was going to be held on June 5th 2006. Well that date passed sometime ago and my detector isn't going off still. I am assuming that they decided to abandon the program. I have posted an article below about the reasoning for turning them off.

I honestly would leave them in the data base for a little while longer and I will try to get concrete evidence that they have turned them off for good.

Charlotte, North Carolina Suspends Ticket Camera Program
Red light and speed cameras turned off in wake of court ruling.

Charlotte, NC The city of Charlotte, North Carolina yesterday suspended its red light camera and speed camera program in the wake of a May 16 state appeals court decision that ruled ninety percent of photo ticket proceeds had to be directed to the state school system, and not into the city's coffers and the pockets of a private vendor.

Charlotte had been paying Peek Traffic Inc. $35 out of every $50 red light citation to operate the cameras ($39 for speeding tickets). Under the court ruling, each ticket issued would cost the city $30-34. That is a price many North Carolina cities have already said they are unwilling to pay. Charlotte joins Greensboro, Greenville and High Point in shutting down their camera program.

Charlotte City Council will meet June 5 to determine whether it can permanently end the program in light of the long-term contract it signed with Peek. The city will also need to determine how to pay the $4.6 million in back payments now owed to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools if the ruling is not appealed to the state supreme court.

can you imagine if they had

can you imagine if they had these in Mooresville??? With the number of race drivers and driver wannabe's here, Lowes could move their corporate office back to Winston and we could boost the local economy with red light cameras!!

Orbital, Thank you for

Orbital,
Thank you for helping me out with this project, I really appreciate it. If only I could use that beam me up scotty feature that they have on star trek. I could just beam myself on top of those red light cameras and inspect them myself.
Wouldn't that be a traffic stopper, where did that lady come from? Oh pay no attention that is just Miss Poi doing her job to make sure that everyone with a gps knows where all the working cameras are at:)
