Garmin charging issue

I went to the trouble to put a 12vdc to 5vdc regulator in my motorcycle so I could charge my Phone and Garmin 260W GPS. No surprise that when the phone is plugged in the phone charges. Disconnect the phone and plug the 206W in and BIG SURPRISE... It thinks it's connected to a computer. It does charge, but I can't use it while it charges.
If I were to guess what the problem is I would say that even though the power is connected
correctly, the 2 data lines probably need to be tied together or to the neg or pos leads. Does anyone know for sure what needs to be done to stop it from thinking it's plugged into a computer?
Charger?
Charger is not the same as 12 volt cradle. Are you using USB?

Yes, I am aware of that.
Yes, I am aware of that. What I am hoping to find is the difference in technical terms. Yes, it is the USB connector that I am using. The AC adapter uses the USB port to charge it and the Computer uses the same port. So the question is what is the difference in wireing between a charger and the USB cable.

Try this
I've read somwhere, that if you go to diagnostic mode (press the battery icon on the screen for 6-10 secs), then plugin the Nuvi and press "Back/ Exit", it will charge AND give you the map display. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks SEWISDOM! The data I needed was inside one of those threads. Here it is in case anyone else needs to roll their own charger.

Wiring diagram pinout to place Garmin Nuvi and Oregon GPS in recharge mode.
Pin Pin
Name Description
1 +5V 5 volts DC
2 data not connected / float
3 data not connected / float
4 GND connected to pin 5 (GND) with 17.3K ohm resistor
5 GND ground
Standard 5 pin mini-USB connector has pin 4 connect to ground (pin 5) through a 200K ohm resistor. To place Nuvi into charging mode, the 200K ohm resistor must be changed to 17.3K ohm. (also successful with 22K ohm resistor from Radio Shack)
Nuvi behavior depends on mini-USB plug connection. (IMHO) it is like this:
pin 4 not connected - data cable, nuvi connects to PC as removable drive,
pin 4 & 5 short-circuited - USB supply 500mA, possible navigation,
pin 4 & 5 connected through 18kOhm resistor - Garmin supply 1A, possible navigation.
I personally modified a cable that connected pin 4 to pin 5 (shorted), and verified the 500 mA charge behavior as noted above.
Nuvi requires 1000mA for simultaneous charging + GPS operation [many 'generic' 12VDC-to-USB adapters output a maximum 500mA]
thanks for the summary!
Thanks VERY MUCH for pulling together the information from various posts and threads -- this will be the one to point to the next time the question comes up!

I wired a weather proof 12v socket on my motorcycle (looks like a standard socket with a hinged, gasketed cover). The gps will get the power it needs and also with a fuse in the factory plug. I also installed an in-line fuse from the battery to the socket for added protection.
No brick here........

I'd guess you are referring to the post above which says to enter the diagnostic screen by pressing and holding the battery level icon?
I've been in that screen multiple times and have never bricked my unit. I don't know where you got your information but it seems to be incorrect.

Methinks many on this forum have been to the diagnostic screen. I have never had a problem, nor have I read of anyone having a "Bricked" unit. Maybe they selected something they shouldn't have selected.

brick? what brick?

Agreed. I've used the diagnostics mode many, many times on all of my nuvis and have never bricked any of them. Whoever gave the info that you would brick by entering diagnostics mode is just plain wrong.
