SD Card Problem (using SD card for POI files)

I copied a POI file from my pc to a PNY 512MB card and inserted into my Garmin 265WT. When I turn the unit on, I cannot see where the file is. I checked in the extra section and can see nothing but my previously downloaded POI files. Any help would be appreciated. I am new to GPS units.

POI Loader

You can't just copy a POI file to an SD card. You have to use the Garmin POI Loader program to "load" the contents of the file onto your unit.

You need to begin by reading the Getting Started and FAQ links at the top of each page. Here's a good place to start:

When you set up the POI

When you set up the POI files to be loaded you may also want to put them in folders so they are easier to find. I have for example a folder for alerts, food, attractions, etc. Mkes it easier to find one if you have several thousand PIO's like the red light camera file.

One other thing

It will help if you copy the structure of the Garmin folder from your unit to the SD card. Not the files, but the folder structure so it has the same folders under Garmin on both the unit and the card.

SD Card Problem

Thanks for your response. I have successfully used the POI loader program to load POI to my unit. What I wanted to do, and I don't know if it's possible, is to load POI onto a sd card to be used in another Garmin 265WT. If you can get SD cards with AAA data on them, why can't I place files on a card to be used in the unit.

To put the files on the sd

To put the files on the sd card you run poiloader like you did before.Make sure to have the sd card in the gps. When you see screen find device select the sd card using the pull down window .The arrow located across from device and select the sd card. This will load the files from your computer to the sd card.

re: SD Card Problem

Open POI Loader > Click Next > Click Custom Folder (Advanced) > Click Browse and navigate to your SD card and the folder where you want the file. Click Next and follow the instructions. You don't HAVE to have the card in your GPS for this to work, in fact you can store the file on your computer's HD and then copy it to the SD card later. That will allow you to make copies of the file for other GPS units to use.

That's correct

You don't need the SD card in the GPS. It's faster for with most Nuvi's to put the SD card in a Card Reader as the Nuvi transfer rate over USB is the old, slow 1.1 protocol while all newer readers and PC's will be the much faster USB version 2.

SD cards

I talked about this on another forum. For travelling it makes better sense to load the information and the poi loader on the sd card under a generic name.

To move the card from gps to gps simply insert it and then connect to any computer, install poi loader on the remote computer and then run poi loader to install the poi files on the new gps.

Another tip is to set your home in a poi file as "MY HOME", then when you use different gps, copy MY HOME to the new gps favourites. Once listed as a favourite, delete HOME from the new machine and rename MY HOME to HOME. Voila, your new gps has YOUR home.

I do this a lot when travelling and spending time in a different location than my real home!

Thanks for the response

I saved a copy of POI loader to my SD card, it will be available if I need to use it.
