Nuvi 255W Doesn't Show Next Street Name ?

I have just upgraded from my faithful SP C530. So
far so good

One thing I noticed, when not navigating on a route,
(i.e. Just using view map) the old SP would toggle
between what road you were on and the upcoming street.

It seems the Nuvi 255W does not seem to do this anymore,
it just shows currently what street you are on.

Has anyone noticed this on other newer Nuvi Models ?
Is this the correct behaviour ?
Is there any way to enable this feature ?
(software update etc.)

Thanks

.

Garmin changed the green info banner to now show the street you're currently on rather than the next upcoming cross-street while NOT navigating a route. Many were very used to seeing the upcoming cross-street, including myself. Garmin should've made this a configurable option but they instead changed it to what they felt it should show. There's nothing you can do about it except complain to Garmin.

Geez, I personally found this feature more handy. Most of the time I already know what street I am on
I guess it will take some getting used to.

Is it the same with all the new nuvis ?
(7xx, 8xx etc)

Dang

That was one of the best features, you knew what cross street was coming up. Especially helpful at night, in bad weather and when there weren't any street signs or they were otherwise obscured.

Garmin, are you listening?

Nuvi 255W Doesn't show next street name

I just recently read that Garmin was forced to omit the next street name in all their newer units because of some legal issues wherein another GPS manufacturer has the legal rights to show information in that way. My older Garmin 760 still shows the upcoming names but the newer models don't. I also read that the ability to have your custom POIs show the name of the POI on the map is also a feature not available anymore on the newer units. Because of this I think I will just stay with my 760 even though there are some nice features on the equivalent newer models.

I have a 2 year old Nuvi 750 and I noticed the other day that it told the street I was on and not the one I was looking for, but it still shows the names of my POIs. Have you checked yours lately?

re street name

I have noticed the same thing on my Nuvi 205. However, when travelling on a highway, it will display the next upcoming street name/off ramp when I'm within a mile or so of the exit.

It doesn't really bother me as the map will typically show the name of the next cross street or side street as you approach it.

Correction

Just went to town and my Nuvi showed the next street to turn on today. Don't know why it didn't the other day unless I just looked too soon.

On another thought while traveling I never see any pois, none of mine and none of Garmins. What is set wrong?

Shouldn't I be seeing Garmin's build in pois while traveling down the street. I am going by all kinds of retail shops etc. and nothing shows.

seeing the pois

I believe I've seen that you have to zoomed way in to see the pois. While zoomed out they might clutter the screen so much you couldn't read the map.

RE: POI display

You have to be zoomed in pretty close and have the map on the 2D view. They won't show on the 3D view with the exception of POI's for which you have set a proximity alert.

Jeff

3D Thanks

I keep my view on 3D. Will have to change to 2D. Thanks so much.

I used mine

today and it worked fine for me...

Hmmm...

I'll have to check on mine....I've never really noticed if it shows the next street or not.

well i should say i noticed

well i should say i noticed it works fine when im on a interstate or hwy(bypass). NOT on a back road or street

Garmin vs TomTom

I am very disappointed with the 255W, very little info on the screen in 3D, it's like driving blind. I updgrated from TomTom One XL, the screen has a lot of info without the clutter. Sorry Garmin, I am sure you can do better. Update the firmware.
