confused

I have made folders on my computer>My POI's, then made subfolders of the different subjects,ie, drug stores, grocery stores, fast food, etc. But when I use POI loader to put on the nuvi(765T) it just puts in one file>poi.gpi. How do I get it to keep in separate folders so on updates just have to update the one that is updated? I know I am missing something but what
question or can I only do that on the SD card?

multi-poi files

you can do this by loading each sub-folder separately.
once you get the first sub-folder loaded go to the poi directory in the nuvi and rename the file 'poi.gpi' to the name of the category you want. then load the second sub-folder and repeat the same process until you get all category loaded as separate categorys.

when you have to update just reload the sub-folder you want. on the nuvi delete the old category and then rename the 'poi.gpi' to the category you bwant.

poi's

If you look on your 765 from the main screen
under...where to.....scroll to extras...custom pois...all the pois should be listed by going to all catagories/file names you have on your computer.
The poi uploader will make a single file when uploaded to your garmin and that's all you'll see if you search it while connected to your computer like you would any other hard drive.

for example

do I rename it rest_area, or rest_areapoi or poirest_area ? and then when update, just delete the one I am updating and rename it

I have a main folder and

I have a main folder and within that folder are 20-30 sub folers each named whatever the poi file name is.
So KFC USA_Can poi's folder would be named KFC to simplify it. I leave the poi file name the same as it is on poi factory so when the file is updated I just save the new file to the correct sub folder within the main poi file and when it asks, "do you want to replace?" click yes.
After you've replaced all the poi's you wanted to just hook up your garmin, start the poi loader and it will put a copy of everything in the updated poi file onto your garmin and overwrite the old one.

the naming of POIs - by bs elliot

you can rename any thing you want, as long as you use ".gpi" as the extension.

So you could name it RestArea.gpi or Rest-Area.gpi.

Yes just delete the old one you are updating and rename the new 'poi.gpi' to the name you just deleted.

p.s. - the word 'poi' does not have to be in the name....

As I first download to my computer I don't rename the actual poi file since you then have 2 files in each sub file and you have to go back and delete the old ones meaning twice the work everytime you update a file. You can name the sub folder containg the poi file anything you want thogh. To save youeself time I would leave the poi names the same as they are on the poi factory meaning windows will automatically overwrite the old file each time rather than you having to do it.
Why create more work?

LOTS OF GREAT INFO HERE

and alot more using the search engine.

Good luck and let us know how everything went.

I think

I see how to install to the nuvi, but trying not to have to see the alerts every time. made like this
My pois=main folder

>>Department stores=subfolder
>>>Pennys.csv
>>>Pennys.bmp
>>>Pennys.mp3
>>>Sears.csv
>>>Sears.bmp
>>>Sears.mp3
>>>Targets.gpx
>>>Targets.bmp
>>>Targets.mp3

>>Restaurants=subfolder
>>>Cracker Barrel.csv
>>>Cracker Barrel.bmp
>>>Cracker Barrel.mp3
>>>Sonny's.csv
>>>Sonny's.bmp
>>>Sonny's.mp3

now if I send to the nuvi, use manual then I will have to reset the alert every time I update?

Use EPE

If you use Extra_POI_Editor to convert all your csv files to GPX, you can do a Control-R and tell it to replace the proximity field with the distance you want. Then you only need to set an alert when you update a file and can load everything with Express.

Thanks

for that info, I will try it

I think we're on the same page here

Your file structure is just what it needs to be. If I understand part of the question you are asking how to just update Cracker Barrel (just as an example) when a new Cracker Barrel file is posted.

The simple answer is to replace the existing Cracker Barrel file within your My POIs\Restaurants and then run POI Loader to refresh the files on your 765T.

But in reading the posts, it sounds like you have several POI files that you assigned proximity alerts to by running POI Loader in Manual Mode.

There are at least 2 choices: Do this each time in Manual Mode and input the proximity alerts for each... Gets kind of tedious doesn't it? Or do exactly what a_user suggested. I'll elaborate just a bit for those who may be less familiar with this.

Open each csv file that you want to have proximity alerts with Extra_POI_Editor and then after setting the proximity distance as he suggested, save the file as gpx and then you can discard the csv file. Now your ready to roll with POI Loader in Express Mode since the proximity is now part of the file.

2 things to keep in mind:

The next time you download that new version of the Cracker Barrel csv file, you will only have to use EPE to set the proximity on that one file, once again save it as gpx in your POIs\Restaurants folder and then rerun POI Loader in Express Mode.

EPE has an odd twist. Since you're in California, you probably like to use miles instead of kilometers just like I do. Even though I've chosen to use miles in EPE, if I input the proximity value in miles, I get something way too big. So instead of entering 5280, if I input 1610 where it says miles, I end up getting an alert at 1 mile. This was discussed in the EPE thread.

1 mile = 1609.344 meters

Just go to options on Extra

Just go to options on Extra Poi Editor then preferences. In Editor select Imperial/US.For field read select metric and file save select metric. Then you can put distance in ft.

Thank you

thats what I was looking for, way not to keep putting the alerts in manually for each update

If you use Extra Poi Editor

If you use Extra Poi Editor to build the alerts in.Here is what I do as other members have posted on using the express mode for poiloader.

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and build the alert in. Once you download the program
you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to build the alerts for. Then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance you want for the alert. Then click replace all.You now have alert set for each custom poi. Then save the gpx file.

Thank you!!! I had all the fields set for Imperial/US and stumbled about with this miles/kilometers issue all this time. Will have to make a note to myself. Did I overlook this in one of Turboccc's help files?

I had the same problem and

I had the same problem and never could figure out why I kept getting different proximity settings then what I had put in.Use to be only one setting.Set for Imperial and that was it.A change came out later and until some explanation by Turboo was I able to get it like I wanted. It is posted on the Extra Poi Editor tread.I don't think we are alone in the confusion.
