An interesting article from WIRED magazine talking about how US troops are using off the shelf Garmin GPS devices to help avoid improvised devices and sniper attacks:

Wonder if they were also using POI alerts
That would be a great application for using TourGuide radius style alerts!
Afganistan maps?
I wonder which units come with the correct maps or more probably they add maps later

creating maps
It is nothing "secret" about creating maps. You can do your own maps if you wish. All you need is base map (they are to buy, sometimes even already in electronic form), tracks from gps (they show actual road you were driving) and software to put it together and generate routeable map for gps. That what they did, using military maps. You can find step by step tutorials on the web.
of course ;)

All you need is get insurgents to give up info about their mine traps spots. Then you can even use red light camera type alerts. Honestly

Thanks for the article! Simple but great idea that should save some American lives and help to kill a few more of the bad guys.
Thanks
Hopefully it will save some of our Canadian troop's lives as well.
