new to forum - Nuvi 760 problems

I'll apologize first if I'm not posting correctly, new here and not much time to read through everything right now.
I've had a Nuvi 760 for a couple years and it stopped working suddenly. I reset it with the 8 sec hold on the power switch which did the trick. Now the sound has stopped working. It doesn't seem to think audio is available in my area (it is available, always worked before). Any ideas?

I'm also wondering, the site is listed a large price tag for map updates. Last time I looked I recall it being around $70. Is there an alternative to paying that amt for map updates? My unit has stopped finding roads that have been around for 20 years.
Thanks!

Have you...

inadvertently left the FM on?
$70 for 1 yr, $99 for life is not too bad of a deal, is it?

Quick checks.

Here are some quick things to check. Make sure you have a TTS voice selected. Make sure the volume level is turned up. Make sure you have the audio output set to Speaker instead of FM transmitter. And while you are in the settings, take a look at your navigation settings and have "Fastest" selected. Also look at your maps and check to see that you have the City Nav. maps selected.

Select New Voice

I occassionally have a problem with my 760 losing its voice too. What I do it select a different voice, let the unit speak in the new voice, then reselect Jill.

Has always fixed the problem for me.

Diddo. I have once had it

Diddo. I have once had it happen to where absolutely no voices at all showed up. I turned the 760 off, turned it back on after saying 5 hell...., I mean Hail Mary's, and they came back.

I really like my 760. Have had it for almost 2 years. Has always gotten me to my destination and has taken care of my needs.

Needs???

It's like a car if you just drive it and don't tune it up it dies. Do updates as often as they come out and you won't have so many problems shock

The obvious question about the OP's 760 overall would be whether he has been keeping his firmware up to date?

Maps don't degrade, per se, but they can be updated to include (or remove) specific details.

Word is that the 2010.20 map has some issues, by the way, so map updates are not always a panacea.

Roads don't change much and the POI database is pretty out of date no matter what maps you have.

So IMO, map updates aren't worth the money - you can always buy a brand new navigator every few years instead of updating the maps 3 times.

Your unit should NOT be having issues locating streets that it used to unless the map file is corrupted (assuming everything else is working). One thing you can try is to send your local map panes from Mapsource to the navigator and select those panes instead of the default mapping and check if that solves the problem, in which case you have a simple solution.

Garmin's map update policy changed early last year - they used to sell a 2 unit license for $150 and an update for $75 but have changed the philosophy and are pushing their perpetual updates with otherwise preferential pricing to generate recurring revenue.

Also, there was a voice issue with the audio files - somehow, something with the Afrikaans file was causing the unit to 'forget' that there was a voice selected and you had to manually reselect the voice file. That's been fixed in a firmware update.

So, the combination needed is to select a language, make sure the audio is not muted and the volume is turned up (and the FM turned off).

I hate to say it...

...but they all seem to do it. If my unit doesn't power down "just right", I'll lose traffic and voices at the next boot up. This is easily overcome by halting navigation/powering off/re-starting. Sometimes I have to go in and manually select the voice I want.

My 760 has many "issues". It was really acting up on a major roadtrip earlier this month. I've got a 360 and it never displays any problems like the 760 does. It's odd and leaves me wondering if the 760 simply doesn't have enough processing capability.

As the others have said, be certain to check for updates and the occasional hard reset seems to put the machine back of track - - at least for a while.

Even with these periodic glitches, I'd never give up my 760. It's a remarkable little device smile

Enjoy.

Ohh, one other thing, Bleau:

Be CERTAIN you back up your FAVORITES file prior to a hard reset. MAPSOURCE works well for storing/maintaining a backup of this all-important data.

I had encountered similar problem with my 760, and did the same thing to fix it. Any ideas what is causing this?

My 750 did the same thing until the latest update to 4.80. Identical fix, only I was listening to Jack, so I switched to Jill and then back to Jack and he got his voice back.

Lifetime maps

As mentioned above, Garmin is now offering lifetime maps called nüMaps Lifetime. The street price is less than $100 and it permits 4 updates per year. Kinda makes the $70 one time update a questionable choice.

Beware: The lifetime is the lifetime of the device you 1st install it on. It is not transferable to a new device or to a new owner.

Unfortunately, these new techno-gadgets seem to have a finite life and in many cases are not economically repairable. Amazon is currently advertising a new nüvi 780 for under $200. Buy nuMaps and a DIY battery and you're 2/3rds of the way to a brand new one with a factory warranty.

That's a decision we each have to make for ourselves.
