Sounds

I am unable to get the sounds and most icons to work with my Kenwood DNX5140 (garmin software). I make sure all the file names are the same (i.e chase.gpi, chase.bmp, chase.mp3). Is there something with the macs that prevent the icons and sounds? If not, then what am I doing wrong? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

GPI?

The file for your POIs should be either a csv or gpx file. The sounds and icons are the right name. Be sure that they are in the same folder. Also be sure they really are bmp and mp3 files. Some people just change the suffix, which will change the icon in the Finder, but that does not change file (e.g. changing a jpg to bmp without using a converter application).

Re: Sounds...

Hi tucker,

Just to add to what Brent said...

When you upload files to your unit, the POI Loader takes all of your .csv, .gpx, .bmp, .mp3 or .wav files from the folder you’ve chosen and “creates” a single .gpi file, on your unit. It consolidates all the file information, from that folder, into a single file on your unit (a .gpi file).

HTH (hope that helps)

Sounds

Thank you for responding. I realize the three files are combined, but why, then, am I not getting the sounds or icons? I am completely confused as to why. Could the Mac format have something to do with it? Thanks in advance.

Second Thought on Sounds

I have tried to create .gpi from .gpx files on the mac version of the POI Loader. I could not. Seems the mac won't work with .GPX files. Do you know how to convert from .gpx to .cvs? Thanks in advance.

Macs work with GPX files

GPX files are just text files with formatting so more information about the POI can be included. Open one up in TextEdit and see for yourself.

On a nüvi the gpi files are created by POI Loader and then uploaded to the Garmin. POI Loader requires a correctly formatted folder to work. Be sure to check your folder structure of the folder you are identifying for POI Loader to use. Use folders within folders to organize your types of POIs. For example, within my POI folder I have folders called Stores and another Restaurants. Within Stores I place the a store's csv or gpx file, its bmp icon file, and a sound file. POI Loader then creates section in my Extras section of the nüvi called Stores.

Another cause may be the way the Kenwood deals with POIs. I looked at the manual and see that it requires you to manually install the poi.gpi file onto the Kenwood. One difference between the nüvi and the Kenwood is that they suggest putting the file on the top layer. On my nüvi the gpi file is put inside a folder called POI, with the single file "poi.gpi" inside. Check the file structure on the Kenwood. Perhaps that is a typo in the manual and you need to add a POI folder. Look for the folder Garmin and add a folder within called poi (use lower case). Within poi place the poi.gpi file.
