Rockville Maryland Intensive Update Task and questions for experienced users

This is my first post on this website and want to be better informed so I can be helpful in adding new ticket camera locations in the area where I live and work.
questions:
1. Are the POI redlight and speed camera files cummulative with each update?
2. With the Garmin POI Loader program, is it necessary to delete the POI files from the Grmin device before uploading the new file?
3. When identifying and reporting a new redlight or speed camera location, is there a standard template that should be used?
4. When I made my first two new location submissions, I used Google Earth as the base map and added place markers where the cameras were located. Is this a valid procedure for providing Lat/Lon coordinates, or should I try to mark the location using the touch screen of the Garmin GPS? Thoughts?
5. About how long from report submission to time the update is added to the POI files?
6. If I am the only person in the Rockville area reporting new camera locations, how are my submissions verified?
7. Would it be helpful to include a geotagged digital image with Lat/Lon and compass direction added to the submission, showing the traffic camera and the street location?

Thanks for any ideas and feedback. rstephen2

.

1.) Each update contains the entire list of currently active locations.
2.) No, they will overwrite the previous file unless you do the renaming thing and make your life unnecessarily difficult.
3.) Just the facts: City and state, coordinates, both street names, and directions covered by the cameras.
4.) If you mean you sent a google file forcing Miss POI to dig out the coordinates, I suspect she'd appreciate the info in the format mentioned in #3.
5.) She updates weekly.
6.) With some 70,000 members, that won't likely be a problem.
7.) Again, I think simple is best -- as in #3. Just make sure you are reporting enforcement cameras, and not traffic control cameras.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

One other thing

The only thing I would add to this:

3.) Just the facts: City and state, coordinates, both street names, and directions covered by the cameras.

Is for the posted speed limit for speed cameras.

Miss POI has been known to contact people and ask them to verify reports of installed and/or removed cameras through email.

That, and welcome to the site.

yup that is the good thing

yup that is the good thing about having so many members. All I have to do is look through my member list to find a reliable source to verify new info.

You guys are really great about getting back to me right away also.

I have been known to lure old users back to the site with my inquiries.

How to Show POI Files in Google Earth?

Thanks for the welcome to the site and for the feedback.

Does someone know if there is a batch process to show the POI Speed and Red Light locations in Google Earth, using the files we download for use with our Garmin GPS units?

I have been working with geotagged images and related data for many years and thought that Google Earth might be a quick way to do a small area scan, or data dump of actual locations in a given community. Has anyone tried this? Thanks. rstephen2

I would be interested in this, too.

I imagine the information about that is somewhere on this site. Just haven't had time lately to search. I would also be interested in how to convert the POI files into a format that allows proximity alerts on a Garmin (when you get near enough to where the POI is). I am certain that is available. Maybe this weekend I can search for it!

that would be very useful

#6... I am in the DC area as well, and will be getting back to sending stuff in like I use to now that I am on the road again everyday.... AND THERE ARE TONS OF CAMERAS all over the great DC and Baltimore area, from Speed Traps to Red Light Cameras... and in Montgomery County the new Speed Trap cameras are going up almost weekly now around the county.

Follow-up on Lots of new Speed and Redlight Cameras in our area

I have tried to see if the Montgomery County, Rockville, abd Bethesda Maryland municipality listings of the cameras is up to date, and have found that there appear to be "many" new additional cameras that I have seen on the road that are not in the databases or on the maps of my local jurisdictions. We should be able to have at least the baseline of existing cameras from the official websites, but have to keep a heads up to add all the new ones. I noted one jurisdiction that used Google Earth maps to show the locations of the cameras that they did list. That means someone has figured out how to do a batch process on POI files. Have a great week! Bob S.
