Garmin poi files

I just installed the Costco POIs from here but I can't find them on my garmin! I used POI loader to put them on my Garmin nuvi 855 which it correctly finds. I've verified that my local costco is there in the CSV file.

Touch where to,extras and

Touch where to,extras and touch custom pois last and you should see it.

I've just confirmed the long

I've just confirmed the long lat is correct, through google earth, and my gps says it's 3.4 miles away. Closer than any of the other costco's (4 pre programmed). But it doesn't show up.

Still problematic

Done that and no I don't see them, hmmm, I guess I have to give it 10 or 20 minutes, because now I see them! But they still do not come up when I ask it to go to Costco. It still gives me the 4 preprogrammed ones.

Custom pois not showing.

Check these steps out.You should get message after running poiloader so many pois loaded.Look at step 9 some users have reported they had to do this to load the custom pois.

1.Make a folder on your computer and give it a name. Example My poi's.
2.Download the csv or gpx file and put them in that folder.
3.If you want to add a bmp or mp3. Download from site and also add to the same folder but make sure you name them the same as the file you want them to go with except the extensions.

>My pois=Main Folder
>>Dunkin Donuts.csv
>>Dunkin Donuts.mp3
>>Dunkin Donuts.bmp
>>Walmart.csv
>>Walmart.bmp
>>Walmart.mp3

4.Hook the gps up to computer using usb cable and then run poiloader . http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/http://www8.garmin.... Select My pois folder when you get to browse.
5.If you want alerts use manual mode instead of express.
6.You should get message so many pois are loaded at the end of the download.
7.On GPS go to where to then extras or my locations if you don’t see extras and touch custom pois and you should see them.
8.Every time you run poiloader it will overwrite the existing files.
9. On the Nuvi 8x5 series. After you load the pois to your Garmin you will need to remove the battery or hold the off switch in the off position for 10 seconds to clear the memory before your new pois will take effect.
Note. The biggest problems with the csv, gpx , wav and mp3 not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.

Your Custom-POIs are not searchable along with the built-in POIs. They are separate databases and must be searched separately.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

The famous Yeahbut

I do get the notification that it loaded.

Ok, here's what I got on my GPS.

When I click where to>poi>spell name>Costco
It returns the 4 preprogrammed ones

When I go to Where to>Extra's>Custom POI's. I get the closest one the one in 3.4 miles.

Perhaps this is the way garmin's should work. Though I would like it If I could merge this with the preprogrammed ones so I don't have to remember two methods of getting to a place. In other words if I used the first method I discussed I should be able to get to the nearest costco no matter if it was preprogrammed by garmin or not.

Yep, that's the ticket!!!

Thanks I kinda figured that out smile but I still don't like it.

Hey, I'm growing younger by the day. Still won't let me escape death. Death occurs when you have no womb to go back into!!

It is a problem that results

It is a problem that results in a lot of duplication. But if you want the latest updates using custom pois that is the way to go.By the way did you have to remove the battery to load the custom pois?

No, I did not. Just didn't know I had to navigate to the extras to find out where costco was.
The 855, and I expect the rest of the 8x5 series, reboots/reloads every time you remove it from the computer.

Pull the battery

On the 8x5 units you may need topull the battery to force a reboot. Rebooting will cause the POI to show.

I'll try that but don't think that'll work. The same thing can be achieved by holding the power slide to the left for 8 to 10 seconds and then turning it back on.

But if you say so. But if it doesn't work I know where you post!!!

.

Nope, still the same a_user. Still have to go to extras to look it up.

So just remember, I know where you post. So watch it! smile

Your OP wasn't clear. You can only search the custom poi by going to extras. The built-in poi are one database, the custom poi are another - and never the twain shall meet.

Silly us, we thought you couldn't see the downloaded POI under Where To > Extra > Custom POI.
