I am a big radar detector hobbist. Tonight I visited Escort's website (escort, for those that don't know, is one of the leading manufacturers of radar detectors). They have a GPS under the Escort name. It is the Escort c550 (powered by Garmin).
So I guess that Garmin makes GPSs for other companies as well. Many Radar Detector manufacturers do the same.
Convenient. It sure would
Convenient. It sure would be convenient to have them in the same unit. I was just thinking yesterday as I was putting the Escort in its mount and bringing up the 660 to its mount that having only one unit would sure make life easier - except when travelling through states like VA where the radar detector would be illegal.

Yeah, it would make it
Yeah, it would make it really difficult in Virginia since it's illegal even to have them in your vehicle.
§ 46.2-1079. Radar detectors
"Except as provided in subsection B of this section, the presence of any such prohibited device or mechanism in or on a motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth shall constitute prima facie evidence of the violation of this section. The Commonwealth need not prove that the device or mechanism in question was in an operative condition or being operated."
What the heck are you
What the heck are you talking about????????????? LOL. A combined unit would be PERFECT for VA. I am in VA and I have to hide my RD. Heck if a VSP stopped you, all he would see is a GPS unit

Radar Detectors
Asian Fire,
You need to get the new Bel STI Driver Radar Detector. It's invisible to Spectre (All Versions). It's completely invisible to all Radar detector detectors. Since Beltronics is owned by Escort now they are all one company.
I prefer my Valentine 1 as I like the directional signs pointing in the direction of where the police are. Right now V1 doesn't have the total invisibility like the STI unit but they are working on it. I like the idea of not having to discard my old unit when a new version comes out.
I prefer to have the Radar & GPS separate from each other. If one breaks they are both out of commission. At least there are only Two states that don't allow Radar Detectors unless they changed it. I know Virgina and Washington are two states. PA use to be a state that didn't allow it.

Thanks, but....

Although the STI is immune to the Sprectre, I am not worried about RDDs. My RD is very well hidden and VA doesn't have any confirmed Sprectre use. I use common sense, a kill switch, and no brakes (if possible)

The V1 is a VERY good detector. However, the direction of radar wouldn't help me in VA since I can't see my unit anyways.

That is true, that is why I never wanted my PDA and cell phone to be intergrated. But the idea of GPS and RD is sorta cool though

Actually, there is only 1 state that is illegal to run RDs, that is VA. Washington, DC (which I guess you were talking about) isn't a state...lol. It is also illegal in commerical vehicles and military bases.

look into it

I have done some research and found that it is only a non-moving equipment violation which means the fine is $50, there are no points assessed, and no insurance reporting. They also can not take the device away so really the only question is, are you willing to risk a $50 fine to avoid a $200+ (depending on whether this state will repeal it's demonstrated unconstitutional double jeapardy of it's own citizens... also another reason to keep a vehicle registered elsewhere). I am definitely willing to risk the $50!
Additionally, because they are illegal, most LEOs leave their radars active all the time... thus the radar detector is even more effective!
.
I try to stay on the correct side of the law, so I wouldn't be "willing to risk it". But everyone has to make their own decisions.
It is sorta pick your poison
It is sorta pick your poison.
Have a illegal RD and get saved from a ticket.
or
Speed and get a ticket that is more expensive and carries points...both are illegal to do.
I also opt for the first choice, but as MM said, each has to decide for him/herself.
