Digital Elevation Maps

Almost all Garmin's can display Topo maps, but not all Topo maps can be used for routing nor are they transparent to overlay the installed base roadmap.

I'm not positive that it's as complete as a proper DEM, but elevation is already built in to the road maps. I know that I can take Mapsource and do an elevation profile on my nuvi's track log and routes, and as I recall the "Where Am I" screen on the nuvi will show the current location's elevation.

edit- having re-read that & thinking about it more.. I guess I'm not positive that the elev data is built-in to the map, or if it's calculated on the fly by the sats. Anyone know for sure?

Try loading one of these maps on an sd card and see how they look, and if they fit your needs.

I think the guy is talking about using a DEM base map as a replacement to his OEM basemap.

The only way to find out is to try it.

If there is room on his internal GPS memory, it might work. Screen refreshes would probably be slow due to processor power.

That was my take also which is why it was stated that many of the maps do not work for routing but will display.
