Trouble copying original gmapprom.img file into my nuvi 350

In an effort to free up internal memory, I temporarily moved the pre-loaded gmapprom.img file out of the nuvi and into my PC's hard drive. When attempting to reinstate the file into the nuvi (via windows copy by dragging and dropping the file into the Garmin folder of the nuvi), the copy operation repeatedly fails with about 30 minutes remaining (at about 40% complete). Since my receiver did not come furnished with MapSource or any other software application, I don't have any other means of moving the file back into the unit. Is there anyone who can help identify the proper procedure for this reload/copy task? I shutter at the prospect of having to send the unit back to Garmin for servicing. I did order Garmin's Lifetime map update card and am waiting for its delivery. Can this tool be used to replace the "missing" file or does the original gmapprom.img file need to be in place for the update to work properly?

Thanks in advance!

Trouble copying original gmapprom.img file into my nuvi 350

By the way, the error message for the failed copy is: "Cannot copy gmapprom: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Not sure what to make of this; the USB cable is properly connected at both ends. Any thoughts into what may be causing this error?

Thanks again

.

MapSource will NOT help you in any way as it sounds like a USB timeout error. All I/O is done via USB...MapSource does nothing special. Things to try:

Make sure your PC is not entering a power-saving mode where power to the USB port is being shut off.

A different USB port and/or cable.

If possible, a different PC.

You are certain

there is enough space on the 350 to hold the file? If you had to move it off to load other things, then you may have not left enough space to copy the file back.

I agree with DorkusNimrod..

I get that a lot with big file transfers and one particular usb port, on my 765T but not my 200W.

I came to the same conclusion as DorkusNimrod mentioned and used the back usb port rather than the front port and everything consistently works fine now.

I found out that Windows and some PC usb 2.0 chips don't get along, but digging for MS updates & chip firmware updates (a real pain) reduced but didn't eliminate it for me.

I'd try what he said..another port or whole PC, or maybe another cable.
