Nuvi 5000: Anybody Use Them?

I'm thinking of a 5000 for an ATV GPS. Power is not a problem, and I'm really liking the big screen (us old guys need those big screens).

I would like a cradle instead of the old ball and socket, but I haven't seen any. When it rains I'd just put a baggie over it (seeing as it's not waterproof).

Also I like to know if anyone has used the topo maps from Garmin? Do they have a lot of detail? Show old mines and cemeteries and 4x4 trails? Show private land, BLM, State, and National Forest?

Thanks for any input.

I considered one

But I settled for a 750 because of the price at the time. I would question if the nuvi series is rugged enough for the ATV application. I bet one of the other lines would be a better choice even though you would have to settle for a smaller screen.

5000

I have a 750 and a 500. I have used them both on the ATV. I used the 750 after the 500 bricked. It worked fine for the two weeks it took Garmin to get me another 500. But thats another story.

And going from the screen of the 500 to the screen of the 750 was very, very nice.

Which leads me to the question of how nice the big screen of the 5000 would be.

The 5000 doesn't have battery power, so if you shut off the external power it has to reboot. I was looking at one for the car, but because of no battery decided against it.

As I always bring my unit inside, I use the time between the house and the car as boot time turning the unit on as I get ready to walk out the door. It's normally ready to go within a minute or two of getting in the car.

Again the lack of a battery is not an issue for me.

ATVs are stored in the shop, so that is not a problem.

Gear up time always exceeds GPS lockup time. So that is not a problem.

NUVI 5000

I have the 5000. I thought the lack of battery was OK and used it on my truck-- recently I was in another city and decided to pick up the grandkids at a sports center in another city-- bumped the lighter cord on the GPS-- it shut off and then rebooted- it took an hour to find the satellites. I had to call for directions.

The 5000 does work OK most of the time, but the hour to find satellites- has happened 4 times now.

Garmin is working with me to resolve the problem.

Let us know how it turns out. I am still interested in the 5000 for the large screen.

Why not . . .

Why not just wire the unit to the truck's electrical system? Do that and the bumping of the plug will be a thing of the past.

The 1490T has a 5" screen and is battery powered as well. I've only had mine a few weeks, so I'm not sure I "love" it yet, but you may want to check this one out as an alternative to the 5000.

Nuvi With 5" Screens

The 1490 is nice but the price is the killer. I might as well go with the overpriced Zumo Series.

The 5000 is less than $200 now. For the price difference between the two, I can buy and install a 2nd battery on the ATV just for the GPS.
