Miss POI

They weren't submitted in advanced by other members yet? The news of this has been going on for quite a while. Will you need an update to this thread if they report other sites becoming active?

Hi, they were discussed but

Hi,
they were discussed but not added to the file since they were listed as future sites and not active as of yet. As they come on-line the other Nassau County locations will no doubt be added to the Red-light POI as well. It keeps down the false alarms as well as complaints from the POI community about inaccuracies in the file!

Take care,
Rob

Let's see what happens

This should be interesting.

How long will it be?

Anybody want to make a guess how long it will be before all traffic lights across North America will have cameras. No matter how careful you drive the odds are that you will get a couple of tickets per year. No tax increases needed.

I say within ten years.

One Camera Removed

After one day of operation, Nassau County has removed one of the three sets of cameras activated this week. The cameras at Merrick Road & Park Boulevard in Massapequa,(#14 on the above list) was taken down. Upon further review, it was discovered that the intersection is within the boundaries of the incorporated village of Massapequa Park, and camera revenues would go to the village, not the county.

Another set of cameras, at Atlantic Avenue & Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway, (#7) which have been installed but not yet activated, will also be moved, as it falls within the village of East Rockaway. County officials have not yet announced new locations for these two cameras.

I drove past the RLC in Bethpage today. It covers the east bound side of Central Avenue at Stewart. About a block before the intersection, there is a standard yellow diamond traffic signal warning sign, with a sign saying "Photo Enforced" below it.

Funny how

the county did that. It's not safety it's revenue for the county and only the county. Got to let Miss POI know this. She added those 2 locations to the lis.

Bronx cameras

I had to go to the Bronx today and the camera alarm went off several times. It seems the Bronx is loaded with cameras.
It was only a matter of time before Nassau got them.
Too much money is at stake.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things!

It has always been about the money...

Not safety as Nassau County clearly proves by removing their cameras from their most dangerous intersections. I guess it ceased being dangerous when it would not make the county money. But making money was always the intent.

And they have the website

of active cameras. Helps make it easier.

Maybe it is about safety too...

Today, Nassau County announced they will be re-installing the camera in Massapequa Park that was removed, and will not drop the location that fell within East Rockaway. The villages will waive the camera revenues in order to get the RLCs in locations they feel warrant them. In addition, they will re-evaluate other locations that fall within other village jurisdictions and may alter camera locations.

From the Newsday article:

Quote:

East Rockaway Mayor Ed Sieban and (Massapequa Park Mayor) Altadonna said Wednesday that while they would have liked a share in the revenue, they wanted the cameras regardless. "This was one of the top five most dangerous intersections in the Fourth Precinct, and it was always about public safety with me," Sieban said.

Nassau Cameras

When will have all the Nassau in a POI file...
I just joined and was hoping to have them all.
I drive a lot in nassau and this will help out a lot...
Thanks

.

Not all the cameras are active - the active ones are in the file. I've been sending along updates to Miss POI as new ones are reported on the county web site or as I see them in place.

Is it really about safety???

Or just because they looked really stupid in Newsday... Still no money to the Village.....hmmm.....

The first tickets are out...

Drivers seeing red after receiving 'robo-tickets'

September 5, 2009 By WILLIAM MURPHY william.murphy@newsday.com

Motorists in Nassau County who make right turns on red without coming to a full stop are getting $50 "robo-tickets" from the county's red-light camera program, and some legislators said they never meant to approve that.

Legis. David Denenberg (D-Merrick) said Friday that he believed he was voting in favor of ticketing motorists who sped through red lights, and accused administration officials of playing "cat and mouse" in their answers when he had asked about such a possibility.

"It was clear from my questions that I was trying to establish that this program would not cover right-turn violations. Obviously, I wasn't asking the right questions because I was left with the impression that it would not apply to that," Denenberg said.

As of Friday morning, 4,500 summonses had been generated by the cameras since they went into operation Aug. 6, and 60 percent of those were for right-turn violations, according to figures from the Suozzi administration.

Also from the article:

Quote:

"I was shocked. I've been driving 50 years and never got a ticket," Pensabene, 81, said. She said she got a mailed notice of violation saying she made an illegal turn on red at the intersection of Central and Stewart Avenues, and admitted she did not come to a full stop.

Amazing, people are upset that they received a ticket for breaking the law. You have to come to a full stop before making a right on red.
