Check out the 5th post down by kermitberg. The topic was on how to make the screen brighter while on USB power, and while it didn't really fix the task it was set out for, it opened up an enhanced USB option that I didn't know existed as well as another diagnostic screen. Following kermitberg's instructions, you can set your 855's USB mode to "Ethernet" mode. And in that mode it will power up normally even while connected to a computer.
I'm pretty sure this should work for any 8x5 series nuvi.
