2010 Maps acting strange.....

I just updated my C340 to the new 2010 Maps a few days ago, and I'm a little concerned. I've been playing around with it in my local travels (within about a 100 mile radius) over the last few days, and I'm getting errors that I never had with my 07,08, or 09 maps......such as it telling me that the approaching turn will be a Right turn, when it will actually be a Left! The map itself is correct, but the voice instructions are sometimes messed up. So far I've only noticed it getting "confused" on two upcoming intersections... but it's weird. I also updated the voices at the same time,("Jack" sounds a little different to me - maybe a bit clearer?)...I don't know if that made a difference.

It's a little disconcerting, since I usually just listen to "Old Jack" to tell me where to go....

I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a three day trip over to the Gulf Coast for a mini-vacation, so I'll be able to give it a good test. I'm taking the old 2009 Map SD card with me just in case!

wrong turn voice instructions

Happened to me on two occasions (ended up taking a wrong freeway the first time -- too much trust in my GPS -- and declined the instruction the second time at another location). I thought I had been distracted and misunderstood, but I'm happy to see someone else had that experience. BTW, I have a 770, 2010 maps and I'm not using Jack.

2010 Map Issues

Was thinking about upgrading, but now I'm going to wait. My 2009 is working fine.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

2010 Maps acting strange.....

I haven't had any issues with the 2010 upgrade on my 650.

Thanks for the update...

I was going to do the upgrade to travel this summer but I think I will hold out to it a little bit till they get the map correct.

Recuperate Loss Disk Space

Just a note for those who want to recuperate the loss disk space when installing the new map updates:
On my Vista computer, you can delete those files that was extracted to your hard-disk prior to installing the updated image to your Garmin Device. On Vista, you will find that folder under c:\Program Data\Garmin

Errors?

Man, to find this out just days before going on a trip to the east coast. 2008 gave me wrong directions twice. Once on the way there and once on the trip back. (Not in the same place) I didn't go anywhere when 2009 was installed, just local trips (within 200 miles) Oh well, guess I'll stop back to report how my trip was.

Is the img file for the 2010 maps still stored in C:/Garmin so that the new maps are available to Mapsource?

Good to know

I'm glad you posted this as I will be taking several trips this year, so far haven't had any problems with my 2010 maps on my Quest2. Will be doing some Rockie Mountain riding as well as a trip to the East Coast. Will be able to give it a good test then.

Thanks again

Wrong directions using 2008 Mapsource

I remember getting the wrong directions on a 200 mile trip that I often make using my C530. Just now I brought up Mapsource and it makes the same mistake when plotting the route. The two waypoints are Grand Prairie,TX and Burnet, TX. The route goes along and gets on State Hwy 281 and then just before the town of Lampasses it turns left onto a little FM road 581 to Hwy 1690 then to Hwy 2527 then to FM 580 and finally back to State Hwy 281. The correct route should be just to stay on State Hwy 281 all the way to Burnet once on 281.

For Vista, the 2010 maps are in C:\Program Data\GARMIN\Maps

For XP, the 2010 maps are in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps

Mapsource will not be able to display the 2010 maps if you delete the files in the GARMIN\Maps directories noted above.

2010 Maps Grand Prairie to Burnet

Mapsource with the 2010.10 maps doesn't go anywhere near Lampasas using Fastest Time. WIth Shortest Distance, it takes Fm-580 into Lampasas. US-281 is only used from Lampasas to Burnet:

23. Turn left onto Fm-580
24. Turn right onto US-281 S
25. Turn left onto W Brier Ln
26. Turn right onto N Main St
27. Turn left onto E Polk St
28. Burnet

significant??

Don't know as my "find" fits here, but just recently finished a longer trip up the east coast, and my Garmin (Jill)made several "errors" or wrong vocal turns with the map displaying the correct one. Also, at one intersection, it had us go straight through, then make 3 right turns, to go the way a left at the intersection would have put us going the right way. I can only assume that it believed a left was not permitted. That was my first introduction to potential direction errors by the GPS. Overall it was a great trip, but you need to make decisions about which is the best method to use (shortest route vs. fastest) as another time it took us all around to get to a motel, when there was a much quicker way (all on paved roads) turning a motel ahead 3 miles into a 10 mile trip (still haven't figured this out. I suspect it's giving you the "as the crow flies" mileage, not road miles). Oh yeah, I'm using the latest map update, 2010.10 version on my 885T, and have the latest updates installed. I had a couple of other issues with the GPS that I need to bring out here on the forums for discussion. You people are a great source of information and help....

Not just the 2010 maps!

I have seen this mistake not just with the 2010 maps. I have had errors like that with pretty much all maps that I have had so far. Maybe more recent map updates produce the error more often than the older maps. I am sure it also depends on the location that the user is at. Anyhow, I agree it shouldn't be that way and an error is an error and can be pretty inconvenient in certain situations.

The worst maps in the last 2 years

2010 Has to be the worst maps ever. Having me turn right, then left to be on the same road I was already on. Putting road in the NC mountains where there isn't any. The streets in Camp Lejeune, NC are gone. (Well most of them that was on the 2008 version the last time I visited) Even some of the streets that was there in Jacksonville, NC was gone. The names were there, but the the map showed nothing. I have also saw where it told me to turn left, but the map showed me turning right, and some times telling me to turn on "north 172" when it's east and west. I rather go back to 2008 maps. I wish I never upgraded to the 2010 maps.

Followup on the 2010 Maps.....

Sorry for the long delay in getting back on this one, but after using the 2010 maps on my C340 for almost a month now, and covering about half of the state of Florida (from Jacksonville down to Naples, and Miami to Ocala) I've decided to go back to my 2009 Maps.

I ran into a number of errors that I never got on any of my other maps. In most cases, the on-screen directions were correct, but the voice directions were completely wrong - this happened about a half-dozen times in my travels this month, and a couple of really weird scenarios as well (having me turn right at an intersection, then a U Turn, and turn back on the road I was originally on - this happened in two different locations). In most cases, I already had a good idea which way was correct, but It really messed me up down in the Ft Meyers area when my wife wanted to find a quilt shop she had never been too - it sent us on a round-about route that was totally ridiculous - at least five miles out of the way, and then circled back!

I've gone back to my 2009 maps and am far more confident in the directions it gives....

You experiences may vary, but the 2010 maps are GARBAGE down here in Florida. I wish there was some way to get my money back on this "upgrade" - If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was written by Micro$oft......

GRRRR......NOT a Happy Camper.....mad

The locations where that occured should be reported to Navteq

I have been all over the Southwest U S after installing the 2010 maps both 2010.10 and now 2010.20 and have not had any problems.

A couple times it told me to go to the next corner and make a U turn on a divided road when there was a actual opening in the divider that would allow a direct turn into the destination. It appeared that the maps just were not aware of the closer turn opening in the divider yet. I never have had the navigation prompt instruct me to turn the oposite of what the map shows.

The locations where that occured should be reported to Navteq so they can correct the maps in the next version.

Interesting....

I have been debating upgrading (my free upgrade) to 2010.20 before my next summer trip. My 780 came with 2009 maps installed.

Since I have a system backup, and if I don't like the 2010.20 map set, does one revert to the old set by just restoring all the backup files to the unit?

2010.20 maps solved a few problems in the DF/W area

The new map solved some positioning errors I was experiencing here in the DF/W area.

I had this happen before

I had this happen on occasion with my 2008 maps. The 2010.1 map I have now seems about the same, only one missed vocal call with a correct map image.

Locally, I now notice an improvement in removal of some POI's that are no longer there, and some of the completed road construction has been added where needed.

I'm going to Florida next month, so I'll see how it does this time, compared to the two previous trips with 2008 maps. So far, I would not go back to the older maps: I'm happy.

2010.10 maps

I've travelled between the Mid-west and the heartland with the 2010.10 maps ... along I90. Whether in Ohio, Chicago, or Iowa, all directions were correct. I've had no difficulties out of these new maps on a Nuvi 785.

2010.20 seems to have cleared things up.....

Well...upgraded to the 2010.20 maps about two weeks ago, and it appears that the errors I was having locally have been corrected. I'm still a little gun-shy to be honest, but things are definitely better after the upgrade......

Avoidences

You may want to check the setup as to what to avoid. I ride a motorcycle and set mine to avoid unpaved roads as there not a favorable route for a cruiser motorcycle. So check your system ans see if you can avoid these type of roads, or maybe this is the shorter route not necessarly the fastest.

Nope.... I've played with

Nope.... I've played with the "most direct", "shortest route", "No U Turns" and "avoid unpaved roads" features a couple of times, they don't make a difference. The issue was that the voice commands were sometimes wrong with the 2010.10 maps.....they seem to have been corrected with the 2010.20 update....

I'm headed up to Jacksonville tomorrow, so I'll see if I get any further errors up there, but around here, all the places it used to get wrong seem to have been corrected.

I'm just learning Vista. Not too happy not having the little Search puppy.

The C:\ProgramData\GARMIN is a hidden folder. To see it, open an Explorer window then click on Tools,Folder Options, select the View tab and the Show hidden files and folders.

No, these files are required by Mapsource and related applications.
