cityXplorer ?

So are any of you familiar with Garmin's cityXplorer series of maps?

Im pondering buying the latest version for Los Angeles cause it covers my area. I figure the $15 is a lot cheaper than the $99 for the Full City Navigator North America...and frankly I dont drive much outside this area, and can likely live with the 2009 maps for a while outside of the LA area

I was also wondering if any of you were familiar with the Nuvi 1200/1300/1400 series - apparenty those models support what garmin calles "Enhanced Pedestrian Navigation", with bus/subway/train routes, etc. That would have been very handy when I was without a vehicle, if it works well...

don't waste your money

Looking at your profile, it looks as if you're from Costa Mesa...I'm from SoCal as well and have purchased the cityXplorer (CX) maps for Los Angeles for my 765T. Bottom line is if you already have City Navigator North America (CN NA) maps on your GPS for your area, the CX maps are a waste of money. The data is exactly the same as what is already in CN NA except for the additional public transit data which will do you no good unless you have a 1xxx unit which supports the enhanced Pedestrian mode.

The CX maps are a good deal ONLY if you do not already have the region on your unit. For example, if you have CN NA on your unit but will be traveling to say, Paris France. In this case, purchasing the Paris CX maps would be a good deal since they're priced at $14.95 while the full CN Europe is ~$130. If you already have CN Europe on your unit and purchase CX Paris, this will also be a waste UNLESS you have a 1xxx unit which supports the enhanced Pedestrian transit mode.

Also note that the CX maps will NOT work if you already have CN maps for the same area already on your unit. For example, you are in SoCal and have CN NA 2009 maps. Installing the CX maps will NOT even display those maps on the unit unless you totally disable the CN NA 2009 maps on the unit by renaming the main CN NA 2009 mapset file on the unit from gmapprom.img to something else. Disabling the CN NA 2009 mapset from the unit using Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info does NOT work either.

Even if you do own a 1xxx unit, CX seems to be buggy/broken when used even with those new units that are supposed to support them. See the thread here with posts from Don:

Yep, Costa Mesa smile Has its ups and downs - fortunately more ups than downs right now

That info about the CX vs CN maps is very good to know. I had assumed it would just update the the data for that specific area, the LA Metro area in this case. The fact you have to go through all that hocus pocus to get it to even show, makes it kind of useless. I could live with it if all i had to do was switch from one map to the other on the GPS, but this sounds like way too much. I do drive outside the LA metro area just often enough to say no thanks

I admit i was reading about the 1xxx series, and was interested...but...if the CX maps are that buggy, Im gonna skip them for now

Thanks a lot for the info.

Yup, the CityXplorer are

Yup, the CityXplorer are only a portion of the NT map package, usefull if you are planning a trip to a city not covered by your base map, but a complete waste otherwise. The MAD maps are fun though.
