They lied - Surprise

Hello everybody..... I was one of those guys with a 7x5 series unit who was unlucky enough to have my brand new gps shut down while I was nearly 500 miles from home last month. After getting home, I talked to a garmin rep, not once, but twice and was told to send it back to them and that they would send me a brand new unit since my unit was still"new". Well I got a package from UPS today and there it was, my "repaird" Garmin.. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with that.. as long as it works, that's the most important thing to me, but I don't appreciate being told one thing and then having another happen. I have since sent several emails to the "rep" who told me I would get a new unit, but as you might expect, he hasn't returned my emails. Just can't stand being lied to, that's all.

Didn't your previous post on this same issue say that you were first advised it would be repaired and you called back to get different rep whose name you had, and it was he that finally promised to get you a new unit as a replacement? Presumably, he agreed that it was unfair to make you accept a "repaired" unit just a few days after purchase.

Since your unit did not require any "repair", just unplugging the battery for a few seconds, I would suspect somebody ruled that the second rep's promise didn't really apply.

I certainly don't think anybody lied to you; he made an assumption as to what was going to be necessary to fix the unit, and that assumption proved inaccurate. Now, I'm assuming that Garmin has sophisticated equipment capable of opening their units with NO marks or evidence that it was opened. If that assumption is flawed, that is different, but you made no mention of such evidence.

They lied - Surprise

I respectfully have to disagree with you on not being lied to. Yes my previous post said I spoke with one, then a second rep who told me they would send me a new unit. When I spoke with the second rep, he was well aware of the fact that they were having a ton of troubles with the 7x5 series, and he even told me how my unit acted before it died.. When I confirmed that his description was accurate that's when he told me to send it back for a new unit. So obviously he knew what was wrong and what the fix was, yet he told me they would send me a new unit anyway. How is that "not a lie" or at the very least being deceptive. As far as the gps goes, I don't really care about that, the fact that my unit has been repaired and is working great is fine with me, I don't really care about a new unit. Given the circumstances I would have preferred he had just said " send it back to us and we'll fix it for you." Thats all!

....

They will send you a new unit if you call back and insist (I wouldn't though because it's such a waste of time... 40+ minutes of wait on the phone and then shipping cost plus 2 more weeks of waiting for the new unit). You can ask for an upgrade, but since your unit only broke down once they probably will not give you an upgrade.

I had a 765T that died 3 times. They promised to send me a new 885T as a replacement on the phone but then sent me another refurbished 765T. I called back again and finally got a new 885T a few days ago. It was a real pain in the arse though.

It really doesn't cost Garmin that much to give out upgrades. The cheapest Garmin unit vs. the most expensive Garmin unit are not that different. All these units cost them less than $100 to make.

Do you have a GPS that works, and in the same standard as the one you turned in? If Yes, what's the problem?

IF Garmin delivered a bad service, you would have all the rights to complain, but...

wink

Can't really call it a "repair"

Loading new firmware can hardly be called a "repair" in the usual sense. Garmin's action was perfectly fine.

That being said, if he was told he was going to get a new one, that's what they should have done.

Sometimes if you "insist"

Sometimes if you "insist" hard enough a CS rep will tell you what you want to hear........ I honestly believe even if they told you it would be new, as most everyone else is saying, the type of "Fix" in this case is something many of us did ourselves. The unit was not "broken".....

If I sent my laptop back to HP because it kept crashing, and they promised a new one, but returned mine fixed because they had a Windows Patch that fixed the problem, I would not expect, nor probably even want a new one....

The meaning of lying

The meaning of lying:
1 :To KNOWINGLY tell an untruth.
2 :To make an untrue statement with intent to
deceive
3 :To create a false or misleading impression
-----------
Just because a person tells you one thing and it turns out to be different does not necessarily mean that person lied to you. If that person is told something and he believes it to be true and he then repeatss that "TRUTH" to someone else and it later is found not to be true, that does not make him a liar.

I just wish that people would be a lot more careful when accusing others of things without knowing all the facts.

I personally think you should at least find out what words actually mean before you use them.

See I can't call you a liar for what you said because you were ignorant of the true meaning of the word LIAR, which means you didn't know what you were saying was wrong............

perhaps?

Sometimes it may be difficult to diagnose a particular malady over the phone. When the object in questioned is physically inspected, it may be possible to be repaired or restored to like new or in the same condition as prior to the non working condition.
Example; your car tire is flat, you call and say the tire is flat, they say, we'll probably have to give you a new one. When inspected, the valve is leaking, and a replacement valve brings the tire back in to the same condition as prior to the flat. Therefore no new tire was necessary.

Return It

Don't know where you bought it but to me the simplest thing to do would have been to return it and gotten a new one. Most Garmin CS people tell you what they think you want to hear..I had to return 2 750's and was told they cannot send a new one....It has to be a refurbished unit.

We Get It

Roland,

I'm sure everyone understands the point you're trying to make. The mystery is why you're making it. You have your GPS back, it works (you could have fixed it yourself and saved the shipping) and you presumably still have all your favorites/poi's loaded so don't have to go through a complete reconstruction. Count your blessings.

Cheers
