Can you extract POI's FROM a GPS to your computer?

I noticed I can extract 'favourites' I have marked in the GPS over to my computer using Mapsource. It did not transfer over the POI files loaded with POI loader - so I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to do that.

An example might be if I had a GPS with custom POI's and I had lost the original source file.

GPS Babel

A program like GPS Babel will convert your POI.GPI file to GPX or many other formats.

See POIs

Use "g7towin" utility. All you need do is to download the CURRENT.GPX file from your Garmin. It is basically free if you care not to contribute to the author.

Current.gpx is a copy of Favorites, not POIs.

Never mind.

Right, I was thinking of FAVORITES. "g7gotowin" will show your favorites very nicely and with a quick access to Google maps.

Using GPS Babel for converting poi.gpx to gpx

Hi - thanks for the tip. I tried the GPS Babel program and it did create a .gpx file from the .gpi file - only thing is it did not include the proximity settings for each POI - and those are important to me.

You won't be able to get that information extracted from the file.

Presumably, if you loaded the Custom POIs onto your GPS unit, you already would have the source files.

Am I missing something?

Perhaps more details would help.

Original Files Lost

That's why I deleted my reply. In his original post, the OP said,"An example might be if I had a GPS with custom POI's and I had lost the original source file."

It turns out you CAN do that

It turns out you CAN get the proximity setting as well by converting to Garmin Database Format (GDB) and selecting the 'proximity setting' for the output file.

Thanks folks!!
