What are "speed alerts"?

I have downloaded and installed the red light camera and stop light camera files and their alert sounds. I recognize what these look like when they "go off".

In addition to these, however, and in only one place, near the Pentagon Mall in VA., my Garmin Nuvi 650 goes off with a ding-ding sound, and displays a red band at the top labeled "Speed Alert".

This isn't part of the red light camera/stop light camera files, is it? And if it isn't, is it something that came on the GPS in the first place?

It's very odd that it is only in this one area that I get this alert.

It sounds like you have a POI file loaded that has a number in the file name, such as Starbucks1.csv or 7-11.gpx.

POI Loader interprets numbers in the file name as speed alerts.

Rename the file and reload the POIs.

I have a few Speed Alerts

I have a few Speed Alerts loaded to warn me when I get in to highly trafficed areas for speed enforcement.

Although I suspect MM's answer is the most likely, you say that you "installed the red light camera and stop light camera files" -- files (plural). Since the enforcement folder that you would have downloaded includes both a redlight camera file and a speed camera file, you may well have installed the speed camera file as well. If you go to Extras/Custom-Pois, what categories are listed -- is there a category for speed cameras?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Please do not interpret this as a complaint but, don't the folks who upload files to the POI library know not to include numbers?

I checked my files and found this to be the only file with numbers in it:

Top 100 DC Restaurants 2008

I have renamed it Top One Hundred Restaurants Oh Eight.csv

It can be either an alert

It can be either an alert for a permanent speed camera or a known speed trap that someone included in the database you downloaded.
