What is the GTMxx traffic receiver firmware update?

I have a Nuvi 660 and I was checking for updates today and I see there is a firmware update for GTMxx Traffic Receivers. I’m not sure if I need that for my unit. In the past, my Nuvi continued to loose traffic coverage. Garmin did an absolutely incredible job with customer service on this and they tested my unit personally and communicated each day with me. They saw the exact same issues I saw which was great and now I have a replacement unit that is working correctly.

However, I'm a little scared to add that update because I don't know if it will cause a problem for me again.

I also don't know if that firmware update will give me any added benefit or if it will ad traffic ads to the screen (which I do not want). The Garmin customer service person I've worked with sent me the following message when I asked her but she didn't address if the ads will show up if I load this update.

From the Customer Service Rep. It should just update the way the traffic is received. And how it comes to the device. It should give you the change history when you put a check in the box.

Does anyone know what this will do and is it worth it for an update?

Thanks,
John

We have 4 traffic receivers and all of them have been updated

We have 3 GTM20 and 1 MSN Direct receivers and all of them have been updated to the latest firmware updates without any problems. Some additional features and options were added with the updates.

Traffic Receiver Firmware

Where do you find traffic receiver firmware updates? I have been all over the Garmin site and have not seen anything like that.

Former Alaskan Sourdough.

You have to use webupdater.

You have to use webupdater. Connect your receiver to your computer and run webupdater. It will list all available updates.

Webupdater

Thanks, nothing for me to update at the moment. But, what is GPS chipset Type M? That is one update that is available.

GPS chipset Type M is the chipset that receives the sat info

GPS chipset Type M is the chipset that receives the sat info and you should update that firmware for new features to be available.

What is the GTMxx traffic receiver firmware update?

I've always installed traffic receiver firmware updates when they're available and have never had an issue. In fact, quite the opposite; connectivity is usually improved.

also never had a problem

Same here, never a problem. Sometimes, the update might change how your traffic info will be displayed, as happened about 2 yrs ago.

I tried to find the old posts but....soooo soooo many to go through. Anyway, should a traffic update change the way the traffic info is displayed, ya just have to get used to it. Eventually, one learns to get along with it.

It's best to update the GTM 20 firmware

Updating the GTM 20 to the latest firmware v5.5 will make it more obvious what is happening regarding traffic subscriptions, and will open up the possibility of purchasing a lifetime traffic subscription to Navteq for $50 (with no ads!). Earlier GTM 20 firmwares did not recognize the Navteq traffic service.

Note that even so, only some of the latest Nuvi firmwares properly name the Navteq service, even though it is working properly. At the moment, the 2x5's, the 7x5's, and 7x0's with firmware 4.8 do it all correctly. The latest C550 and 6x0 firmwares will work OK with the Navteq service, but they do not properly name the new service. Instead, they just stay with the New Subscription entry, even though the traffic service is properly working.
