Newbie

Hi everyone

I don't know if I'm posting in the right place so forgive me.I'm new here and also new to the GPS world. I ordered a Nuvi 360 which I haven't received yet, but looking very much forward to. I've been lurking for the past couple of days, and I'm amazed of all the info and knowledge you people have. I've already downloaded the varifier and found that it works well. I did notice on some speed camera Poi,s that I obtained from another site, that after the varification it did not enter the quotions. It did however seperate the columns and add in the commas.Do the quotation need to be put in. I am planning a trip to Italy in June, and I am looking for as many POI's that I can find. I can not find any on this site. Any help would be greatley appretiated.

Thanks

Welcome Aboard!!

Welcome, As you can see, you will like this site.. much info and alot of fun.

to find the POI hewre -- just go to the top of the page and find a POI files tab, Click it and it will take you to a poi menu, Look for what you need and click on it. You will then need to click again to download the file. Good luck , and have fun!!

Could you give me a couple line of your POI

Hi Sting-Ray,

Welcome to this site.

Could you provide me with the first two lines of the original POI file and the first two lines of the FileName_V.csv file the POI Verifier created? If you could copy and paste it to this post, I could take a look at it. You possibly were looking at the original file (which POI Verifier does not change), not the _V.csv file.

Thanks.

Italy poi

Hi and Welcome.

This site has a vast amounts of POIs. But mainly referencing areas in Canada and the US.

With your trip to Italy in June, I'm assuming your trying to find some POIs in that area.

Also I would think you would need to load the Europe Map (at least Italy) into the Nuvi 360 for European POIs to be useful. Since only US, Canada & PR are included and loaded. You would have to order the Europe Map.

They are the same for haostitals and fast food.

I ordered the map of Italy on SD card. Still waiting for it.

POI File Verifier

Thanks for the examples.

I pasted your original file into Notepad, ran the POI Verifier, and got the following results viewed with Notepad:

39.914720,8.585280,"direzione oristano- parte opposta al centro commerciale portanuo"," "
39.739240,8.603720,"vigili urbani"," "
40.686750,8.629870,"S.S. 131 - Sotto il cavalcavia - Entrambi i sensi di marcia"," "

It appears either you aren't using Notepad to view the file or we aren't talking about the same program, i.e. 'POI File Verifier' at:
http://showcase.netins.net/web/topnotchcomputers/Htmls/Misc/...

There are several reasons we may not be talking about the same program:
1. POI Verifier will insert commas after each field except the last field. Your example doesn't show any commas delimiting each field.
2. POI Verifier will enclose field 3 and 4 in quotes. Your example doesn't show this.
3. Since there are two commas at the end of the last line, POI Verifier sees this as 5 fields. It then deletes the 5th field and inserts a space in the 4th field if no data is present. Your example doesn't show this.

Hope this sheds some light on the problem.

I didn't paste it into note

I didn't paste it into note pad first. I took it right from the original file, and paste it into excell.could that be the problem.
I noticed after the last comma there's 2 quotions.
Is that OK.

Yes, the quotes are ok. The reason for that is explained in #3 above:
3. Since there are two commas at the end of the last line, POI Verifier sees this as 5 fields. It then deletes the 5th field and inserts a space in the 4th field if no data is present.

The program then encloses field 3 and 4 in quotes.

I think it is best to save

I think it is best to save your work in Notepad then open the notepad document in Excel. I have found dependeing on the version of Excel - if not converting from a text document it can do its own modifications to the data.

Do I need to put it into

Do I need to put it into excell or will it do it automatically.
Soory for all the dumb questions but I very new at this.

Thanks for all your help.

Saving with Excel

You can also save your spreadsheet as a delemited Text file. This way it is justy a plan text and all the commands, controls, embeded info from Excel is striped.

This seems to work for me.

You can alway rename the extention to anything you want later.

Saving with Excel

You don't have to open the file in Excel. I prefer to use Excel as it automatically enters quotations (during the save) on the 4th column when I add linebreaks or have commas in the data.
Be careful.....the open and close quotes that Excel adds are not visible when you view the file in Excel. If you add extra quotes, it will appear correctly but will actually have double quotes and will not work. You would see this if you open the file in Notepad.

My preference is to just use Excel

Many Ways

I agree creating csv POI files is a lot easier in Excel than Notepad; but Excel can 'lie' to you. A text editor (like Notepad) will display all the characters in the POI file, not just the ones Excel has a "liking" to. Everyone has their favorite way of creating POIs. What works best for me is create them in Excel, open them in Notepad to see exactly what characters are present (like the double commas at the end of each line in the example), and use POI Verifier to check and correct it.

I must be doing something

I must be doing something wrong. Here is a couple of lines that were saved as excel and opened with note pad.
"40.579020,8.320070,Ospedale Civile(alghero)>+39079950235,,"
"40.720630,8.553540,Policlinico Universitario(sassari)>+39079228292,,"
"40.717540,8.554220,Ss. Annunziata(sassari)>+39079220500,,"
Note where the quotes are.

Now here's one after varification of the same file opened in note pad.
40.579020,8.320070,Ospedale Civile(alghero)>+39079950235,,
40.720630,8.553540,Policlinico Universitario(sassari)>+39079228292,,
40.717540,8.554220,Ss. Annunziata(sassari)>+39079220500,,
40.721160,8.558520,Policlinico Sassarese(sassari)>+39079222701,,

Thanks guys.

re: I must be doing something

Sting-Ray
The file after using POI Verifier is in the correct format, but I believe there are errors with the input. If I copy the data you have for the verified file into Notepad and save it as a .csv file, it opens fine in POI Edit.
The problem is that the locations are somewhere in Algiers. I believe that the longitude and latitude information is reversed. If I reverse them, I end up in Italy, but I believe in the wrong place. This may be due to the data not being in decimal format but in another format that needs to be converted.
Hopefully, this will start you in the right direction.

I saw sardinia

I used sting-ray's coords and wound up in Sardinia, which I think is where he wants to be.
Given his data and coords

"Sassari in Sardinia, Italy. The second-largest town on the island in terms of population, Sassari is one of the most ancient Sardinian towns, and contains perhaps the best collection of Sardinian art."

I'm sure retiredtech will get him fixed up

I wouldn't mind going to Sardinia, but I don't think my car is up to the drive from Texas. Just for fun, I'll try to load the coordinates tonight and see how it routes me across the ocean.

POI

Thought you might like an update on the POI problem.

Not knowing what language it is written in, I used Google to do a search on one of the POIs. Google translated it and we came up with a city in Italy (Verona). Used gpsvisualizer.com to get its Longitude and Latitude: Longitude=E10.99; Latitude=N45.44

This showed the Longitude and Latitude entries in the POI file are reversed per Garmin's requirements. The file was corrected and sent back to him.

He has his GPS on order and should have it in a couple of days. I don't have a GPS with Europe maps, so have to wait for him to try it.

I still say it's Sardinia, specifically dealing with the medical field.

Unless, there is more in the file than what has been posted here.

I guess we'll have to wait for Sting-Ray to let us know.

Going to Italy

Stingray wanted these POIs for his GPS when he goes to Italy in June.......

The file had a lot more lines than were posted...one of them being Verona, Italy. The point is the longitude and latitude fields were reversed.

"Internet: As Yogi Berra would say, "Don't believe 90% of what you read, and verify the other half."

so how do i start?

I just purchased a garmin 350 nuvi. don't really know where to begin!

Still waiting

Still waiting for my unit to come in. I'm also witing for my SD card with a map of Italy to come in. I'm assuming that the custom POi's will have to be downloaded into the SD card for them to work with the map of Italy. I'm I correct.

Thanks everyone.

re: installing custom POI's

You should be able to load them either on the SD card or internally.

SD card

I'll try it on the SD card, since thats where the map will be on regarding those POI's.

Thanks again.

Looking at Garmin's web site, I think you have all of Italy that is available. It appears to be included on the European map set...which is included with your 370.

Anyone with any additional info, please jump in.
