VIA Points

With a nuvi 680 when uein g a VIA point , is there something you have to do after getting to your via point to get the nuvi to guide you on to your original destination, every time i have used a via point and leave the via point it wants to guide me back to the via point instead on to the main destination

Do you actual get to almost

Do you actual get to almost the exact coordinates of your via point? Do you stop at your via point or just keep on truckin'? How far down the rest of your route do you have to go before it auto skips the via point?

When ever I pass and do not go to a via point it will attempt to route me back to it for somewhere around 10 miles.

you must arrive

If you unit does not acknowledge your arrival you will be routed to the via point. I used to just go to recently found and select the original destination and continue on my way.

Try an intersection

Try using an intersection you have to pass through as a routing via point. That way the via point is cleared and the next one pops up.

Are you using a via point that is squarely in the road? When I have your problem, it is because the via is too far from the roadway and it is deemed as not having been reached. Previous discussions have suggested a via squarely in your lane of travel.

have to get GPS to acknowledge arrival at VIA

If the GPS does not show an arrival at the via point when you start to proceed away from it the unit will try to direct you back to it. I have this problem on the 265W and 265WT if the via point is showing along a highway and I enter a driveway entrance from a side road instead of the highway it thinks I have not arrived at the via point yet and will try to route me back to it once I leave.

Via Points

Selecting the intermediate via point can sometimes be tricky. It might be easier to set the intermediate point as though it was your final destination. When you get close, simply go to Menu-Stop and then enter your actual destination.

You likely won't go through anymore steps, since you have to actually tell the GPS Yes when it asks if this is a Via point.

Via points

If you enter the farthest point first and then enter your Via point it will come out ok.

Via Points

If you don't actually reach the intermediate via point, it will still try to direct you back to the intermediate point.

You might want to go to Florida, by way crossing the border at Detroit, instead of Buffalo. If you simply used "City-Detroit" to generate the via point, it will first want to take you to the center of Detroit.

Again, selection of the via point has to be done with a bit of forethought.

I always enter the final destination first then the intermediate point and never had a problem with my 660.

I had no idea...

...I had no idea that my 660 could do this!

not on 660, but on 760

I do not believe Nuvi 660 can set via point. But, I am able to set multiple via points on Nuvi 760.
Like others, I also use map view to register a road I will travel through (ensure it is in right direction such as US-15N vs. US-15S). Once I hit that via point, it will make such announcement and proceed to next via point. With this way, I can make sure the GPSr is guiding me the right route. smile

Other via point questions

Perhaps someone here can shed some light on these via point "phenomena", which I encounter on my 760.

Let's say I've created a via point at the intersection of Broadway and 42nd Street. Now let's say I'm driving on Broadway toward the via point. Why does the voice announcement say "arriving at Broadway", which I'm already on, instead of "arriving at 42nd Street"? Is there a way to define the via point so that it will announce the cross street instead?

Also, often, but not always, I'll define an intersection via point like Broadway and 42nd Street, and the via point and the voice announcements will identify the intersection as "Road and Broadway and 42nd Street". Is there any way to get rid of that irksome and unnecessary "Road"?

.

Don't try to tell that to my 660 because it certainly thinks it can. It limits itself to a conservative single via, but it does one quite nicely.

When you set your via point, put it just a bit to the right on 42nd. Then it should be spoken 42nd st.

As far as what is actually announced, after you set the via point, go to Recently Found and see what the point was actually called. I don't have my box inside, so I can't recall for sure, but you should be able to edit the name to whatever you want.

Will give them a shot

phranc,

My fat shaky fingers always make it a challenge to position the map exactly where I want it, but I'll try moving the intersection point once I've defined it and see if that makes a difference in what's spoken.

As for renaming the via point, that's one of those thoughts that is so obvious it was invisible to me. Thanks for both of those suggestions.

You are correct. Somehow I never noticed this function before I gave the unit to someone.

Correct side of the road

Also be sure that you select a via point on the correct side of the highway or road (if it is a divided road with a median). Otherwise it may not recognize that you have passed the via point and will keep trying to bring you back.

To minimize the "fat finger" problem someone mentioned above, I use a stylus from my smartphone instead of fat fingers smile Or better yet, if you have it, choose your via point using MapSource on your computer, then transfer it over.
