My nüvi 255W developed Laryngitis!

I loaned my nüvi 255W to a friend (I know – DUMB) and when it came home the TSS no longer functioned. I quickly determined that the proper voice and language were selected and that the MUTE function had not been engaged. All other functions worked properly – including proximity alerts – just no voice. I finally came to the conclusion that my friend had somehow gotten into the diagnostic tests (holding down the battery 10 seconds) and had managed to turn off the speech function. Eventually I just started the tests and allowed them to cycle to completion. After a shutdown and restart the TSS had reset itself and all is now fine.

My question is this – Does anyone know how (or even if) running all or part of the diagnostic tests can shut down the TSS? I’m just curious as I have never seen any Garmin documentation on the diagnostic functions. God forbid that a certain teenage geek that I know should get into this!

Sorry - I meant to type TTS (Test to Speech)

So, go back and hit the edit button -- but it is "Text", not "Test".

I looked at that diagnostic

I looked at that diagnostic pages and got scerrred and carefully left and have not returned. I think that is for the Garmin folks and not the common user unless it is under direct supervision of garmin.

My 225W TTS voice quit once.

My 225W TTS voice quit once. I thought I would have to reload TTS voices, but when I turned it back on the TTS voices were back. Go figure.

depends on the voice you select

doesn't it depend on the voice you select? Some voices do not have TTS.

Had similar experience with 750

Prior to v4.80 (assume it's fix since I haven't seen this since the update), Jack would go quiet for no apparent reason, but he was selected, volume was up and not muted! I swapped to Jill, she was chatty and then swapped back to Jack and he decided to talk once again. This would happen once every couple of weeks and I couldn't pin down what I may have done. I really think it was a bug and hope it is fixed.

Wish that garmin would not

Wish that garmin would not screwup the voices with every update.

During my investigation I

During my investigation I selected Jack TTS and the problem continued until after I ran the diagnostic to its completion. I can't help but assume that the diagnostic had been started by my friend who then aborted out in a panic. I assume this caused the TTS to be silent until after I had run the diagnostic to it's end. I am just more than a little curious as to what is going on within the diagnostic.

Maybe

the person who used it tried to change the voices or update it without telling you. Whenever I loan someone my gps, they play and drool over it than use it.

The moral of the story is...

The moral of the story is .. do not lend you GPS to anyone, if they can't afford one, how will they afford two when yours is broken???
I know this sounds harsh, but being in business for years with people wanting to borrow your tools constantly, brings me to this conclusion, that is why I kept a seperate tool box with older and cheaper tools, and would only lend from those, and when someone dared to ask for my speciality tools, welllllllllll...........
