nRoute - Anybody using it?

I am extremely interested in linking my C330 to a laptop to pull extra data from the device while driving. Main goal is to try and develop an AVL type solution for law enforcement.
Does anyone here have experience with nRoute as my understanding is this the only software from Garmin that will allow this to work.
Secondly, has anyone here tried to pull real time data from a Garmin streetpilot into a laptop?
Thanks
Dave
NRoute et al
NRoute is certainly Garmin's offering. I've had it working with a C510 and will show your position on the map and record a track. I only did it out of curiosity - because it's a real fiddle trying to mount the laptop, plug in the mains inverter (no battery life :-(, string the cables around etc - but yes it worked. (But if you're tempted to mess with the laptop while you're driving, you'll probably become the subject of a spot of law-enforcement yourself !)
There is a (commercial) product called GPSGATE that translates the proprietary Garmin output to NMEA sentences. You can then use any GPS software that understands NMEA. This should widen the scope considerably.
Also, you could consider Stempsoft's GarXface active-x control. This interfaces to Garmin GPS's and saves you all the USB programming. Being Active-X, you can embed it directly in an Excel spreadsheet or web-page - it doesn't have to be a conventional program, as such. Again, it's a commercial product.
It has to be said though, that a Streetpilot makes an expensive GPS receiver, compared with a dedicated unit - unless you have one spare. (Also - I don't know for sure that the C330 performs in exactly the same way as the C510 in this respect)

Earthmate might be a better choice
Not sure I know enough about what you are trying to do, to give a lot of advice, but I'll try anyway.
If I was going to use a Laptop for collecting the data, then I'd have to give serious consideration to using a very simple GPS receiver, like Delorme Earthmate. It has no user interface or screen, and is design to send it's NMEA stream to a laptop. Earthmate is rather inexpensive and you use the power of the laptop for any navigation. Delorme street atlas, can do everything and more than the top of the line Street Pilot (like the 2720).
Street Atlas combined with a laptop, will not only give voice instructions, it takes voice input.

Thinking of doing something like this?

Hot Link
I was wondering if JM or Miss Poi knew of a way to make links that people post here as "Hot Links" where we would only have to click on a link and we would go to that page when someone posts this like Keith did above. Whataya think??

We used to have that feature
We used to have that feature and spam posters were taking advantage so we took the feature out.

Thanks for the quick feedback
First, I appreciate all the quick answers and good advice. I will try to explain a little better what we are trying to do.
I am with a county Sheriff's office in Illinois and we already have in use many Garmin C330. We purchased the units to allow our officers the ability to have preprogrammed POIs that we patrol frequently and the officers love the ability to enter address they may not know off hand into the unit.
Our current administration now would like the ability to do AVL on our squadcars and make the locations of our units available to dispatch and supervisors to allow for better routing of cars to calls and to provide for officer safety.
We would like to use our Panasonic toughbooks in the car that are equipped with EVDO cards to feed this data back to a central system. Kind of like the GPS Buddy website that was referenced in another post.
We had considered using an external GPS receiver and running a map program on the laptop, but with all the applications that need to be present on the screen, it just isn't possible with the limited real estate. The officers also prefer to have the Garmin in heads-up mounted view by the radar gun readout. In the future we are looking at purchasing new dispatch/mobile computing software that will intergrate all these features, but that is still 18-36 months out.
I was just researching to see if there was quick fix solution that doesn't lose our investiment in the C330 which we already have and love while trying to meet the needs of the Sheriff.
Thanks,
Dave
I haven't been able to get
I haven't been able to get my c330 to work with nRoute. Although I was previously told by Garmin that nRoute would work with my c330, I later told that it will not work. I tested the software with my eMap and it works fine, but with the c330 I get a Connection Broken error message.
If anyone can get it to work, please share it with the group. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

I was able to get nRoute to
I was able to get nRoute to work at one point with my 2720, and not at all with my Nuvi 660. An older version worked well with my StreetPilot III.
Thanks for the update
I am experimenting with nRoute right now, connectivity with the C330 is not good. Most of the time, I can't establish a connection. We may purchase a Nuvi here in the near future to experiment.
Thanks,
Dave
