If you have mapsource you
If you have mapsource you can use the transfer tab to receive favorites from device and then transfer them back.

Plug the old Garmin into your computer. It will appear as a new drive. Open the drive and go to the Garmin/GPX folder. You should see a file named Current.gpx. Copy that file to your computer and then rename it to temp.gpx. Now plug your new Garmin into your computer and copy the temp.gpx file into the Garmin/GPX folder.

I don't understand the renaming part. Why do we have to rename it to temp.gpx? Why would the new GPS expect to see temp.gpx instead of current.gpx?
well
you don't have to if you don't want to save any of the current favorites you are copying too on the gps.

I'm sure there are other programs that will collect the favorites, but I've found that Mapsource is the only way I can get to my favorites, saved routes etc on my device. I cannot see them when attached as a drive.
Actually its really quite cool, because you can save favorites off to mapsource, and send them back as Custom POI's

The current.gpx file is not the favorites database -- it is just a copy of it. GPX files placed on the gps are added to the favorites. If current.gpx were not an exception, the file would keep adding duplicates. Some (all?) models seem to treat temp.gpx differently in that they delete the file from the gps after adding the locations to favorites. You can use any name, but only temp.gpx is deleted without having to do it manually.

find the folder they are in on your gps. you probably should backup everything on your gps to your computer if you have the space.
the gps gets mounted on your computer when you connect with the usb cable. open my computer and you will see it just like another device. if you click on the gps and keep drilling down through the folders you will find all the files he gps uses. just be careful not to delete any, good reason for a copy of gps to your computer.
Here's what I got from your
Bentbiker, here's what I got from your post (correct me if I'm wrong):
- Favorites are NOT stored in current.gpx
- Favorites are stored in an unknown or user-inaccessible location in the GPS unit
- Current.gpx is just a "mirror" copy of Favorites
- When there's a new GPX file (eg: whatever.gpx) in Garmin\GPX folder, it will be automatically added to Favorites database. Current.gpx file will also be updated to reflect the additional info.
- GPS unit automatically deletes Temp.gpx after it has successfully imported new info into Favorites database
What if the filename isn't TEMP.GPX? Since the unit doesn't auto delete it after importing the content into Favorites, will it be imported over and over?

Well, I was just about to reply that you had correctly stated what I understood to be the way it works when I decided to check out the repeated addition of gpx locations over and over if the file was not deleted. Now, I have a much bigger problem. My 660 no longer adds any gpx files -- no matter what I do, or what the gpx file is named. I know it worked before, but that was with an earlier version of the firmware. I don't know what is going on now; the gps now deletes any gpx file other than current.gpx in the \Garmin\GPX folder (without adding them to Favorites).

Oopss... I hope it goes back

aren't we're drifting quite far afield from the OP's question about moving favorites?
IIRC, .gpx files started getting deleted when Send to GPS was added to Garmin Communicator for Google maps and Mapquest.
When I had a 680, I used the Send to GPS function of Google maps and Mapquest. These created temporary .gpx files names such as gpxfile109517182130.GPX and MapQuest 742.GPX in the \Garmin\gpx folder. These files were imported to Favorites and deleted after disconnecting and rebooting the nuvi.
On my 760, the temporary mapping .gpx files get deleted, but NOT temp.gpx. It contains routes transferred by Mapsource that can be imported to stored routes.

WAASUP - how are we "drifting quite far afield from the OP's question about moving favorites"? The easiest way to move favorites without having to load a program is to copy the current.gpx file as I instructed.
