GARMIN told me i coulnt use icons in my Garmin nuvi780 ??

I waited for about 40 minutes for a software specialist because i cant figure out the POI's...

they went into my computer but they told me its not possible to display icons from the POI FACTORY into my nuvi unit... ? ( besides the typical grey dot)

I dont believe this to be true but please help or correct me if im wrong.

thank you. smile

They work

on my 255w and on the old C330 & C340 units - when you zoom in real close 500 feet they show up.

However the file name is a critical point for the icons to show up.

Did you try searching for the answer or check out the FAQs?

The icon must be in the same folder as the POI file and have the same name as the POI file with the extension remaining bmp. example:

lights.cvx
lights.bmp

Please search for you answer before posting. Thanks

Icons have to be loaded along with sound files at the same time as the custom poi. All the files have to be in a folder on your computer and POILoader has to access them in one operation.

All the files must have the exact same name with the exception of the extension. You must be certain you do not have double extensions (2 periods in the file name).

An example:

>>IHOP.csv
>>IHOP.bmp
>>IHOP.mp3

Poiloader will process these 3 files and create a single poi.gpi file on either your Garmin or SD card. If you try to load another set of POI after this, you will erase the IHOP poi and replace it with the new file - unless you load all of them together at the same time.

The .bmp file is a maximum 24 x 24 pixel icon. The most common reason for files not to display correctly is double extensions.

they are in teh same folder, they have those different endings with the same name and the size is 22x22 but garmin support told me the maximum was 16x16 ... to be honest they didint sound to convinsing. but is there a way to reduce this 22x22 to a 16x16?

Resizing Icons

There are several free programs available on the 'net. I use paint.net to manipulate my icons.

24x24 Work Fine in the 7x0 Models

I have a 750 and my icons work fine. Some are 24x24 and some are 22x22. So you don't need to resize the icons. There is something else wrong.

Are you positive you have the file names correct?

The biggest problems with

The biggest problems with icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.

Charlie. Nuvi 265 WT and Nuvi 2597 LMT. MapFactor Navigator - Offline Maps & GPS.

They DO work on the 780

I’ve got a 780 and have been using icons for some time now. All the above about name, same folder and such are all important, and if followed, should produce the icons. They have to be added in manual mode with the POI’s, but again, when they are entered correctly they will work. Garmin guys are usually very up to date on things, I'm surprised one of them would tell you that the 780 can not display them.

Custom BMP Files

There is quite a bit of information here:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4537

I will say that not all of the GPS units behave identically with regards to this, in fact I had created some custom BMPs back when and after learning that they didn't work with my Garmin Street Pilot 2730 I had sort of forgot about them. Then, after getting the Garmin Nuvi 500 recently, I downloaded some POIs and was pleasantly surprised to see the custom BMPs on the Nuvi 500!

Express Mode

I recently switched from a Nuvi 660 to the Nuvi 780. With the 660 all icons showed on the map but not on the 780. I used POILoader and did not change any file names or bmp sizes. I also used manual mode with POILoader but still no joy.

icons and sound files

Followed your directions on loading icons with poi files. Worked great with my c340.
