Moderation vs Censorship

It depends upon your definition of censorship.

Members use this forum knowing it has moderators which by definition makes it a moderated forum.
Of course moderation can be viewed as a form of censorship like not being allowed to yell FIRE in a crowded public area can be viewed similarly.

"Censorship usually implies removal objectionable material by the government. When done by a private enterprise, such as the editor of a magazine, it is viewed more as editorial control.
A particular moderated group may be "censored", the internet as a whole is not censored, as for each moderated group there is a suitable unmoderated forum to which the material can be posted."

We use this moderated forum at the discretion of its moderators who stress keeping it a friendly area to share information on topics they deem suitable.

Of course there are people here like anywhere else who seem to exist merely to agitate others and "stir the pot" so to speak. It is incumbent upon the moderator(s) to keep this environment from sinking to the lowest common denominator by exercising their right to use editorial control.

After reading the opening post I decided it didn't interest me..

I am only interested in the gps subjects at this forum. So I have not commented but read a few of the responses and see that some members are being driven away. I think Maryann has every right to close a post that is divisive and or drives members away. Its not censorship, its business... which any good capitalist should recognize... wink

BTW BobDee and I have opposing political views but we can still be friends even if we don't agree on some matters.... shock What can you expect from a liberal born in Hollywood, in a city on the verge of bankruptcy, that can't afford a parade for the Lakers, where the Laker fans riot when they win....

However

this isn't a magazine, it is truly a community of people. And the thing I like the most is each of these nodes or posts have a permanent record on the search engines, so they are never really erased or removed, just censored from the community. All you have to do is search "Obama urges doctors to back his health care plans" and there it will be.
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=Obama+urges+doctors+to+back+h...

Do I stir the Pot?
No, I just engage others in to conversation, and if you don't like it, well don't read it. I myself work very hard for this community, and have for a while now.

If the forum it an open forum then there is no reason to take down this thread, If it's not an open forum and is open to one persons censorship then it's not an open forum now is it.

I for one would feel a lot better if the decision was made by a few people rather than just one.
A blue ribbon panel or the grassroots, something like that and a warning, stating that things are getting a little crazy. (which they were not)then possibly partial removal of the offending wording or text.

One more thing

Will Obama provide free health care to the people that are in the country illegally?
Or will he just make them citizens?

It would be cheaper...

It would be cheaper than all of them going to the emergency room for a cold! Who do you think pays for that? Bush had 8 years to kick them out and build a wall, and he never did. I'll take Obama's solution, whatever it is.

No president has addressed this problem.

No president has addressed this problem and that is why we are it the mess we are in here in California.
President Reagan signed the “Kennedy Amnesty” bill (yes Teddy) to finally put an end to illegal immigration. We saw how well that worked.
“I'll take Obama's solution, whatever it is.”
Wow just drink the kool-aid and every thing will be fine.

You are right. No president has addressed it, and that is why CA is in the state it is. CA also did not do anything to help itself, either, and those in CA did not do anything to stop it. Might as well drink the kool-aid, you guys have been doing it for years.

Gary!

California tried to stop it

And was overturned by the federal courts.

We have to live by federal mandates.
A state is not allowed to protect a US border and the feds refuse to.

If you live in a border state you know what I am saying.
Otherwise, as the saying goes,
“Do not try to describe to ocean if you have never seen it,
you just might end up being wrong.”

How exactly did they try to stop it???

I have lived in a boarder state. It is called NEW MEXICO. How did CA try to stop it?? What case specifically do you reference?? What mandates?? CA is the birth place of MS-13, and has habitually been lax with any type of law enforcement. CA welcomed illegals with open arms, saying that there was enough to go around. CA has been happy with the lawn care and the home maids, and in general has looked the other way for years. Now CA has to pay that price. The rest of us will also.

Proposition 209 to Start.

You need to do some research.
California is not the birthplace of MS-13 and if you are not aware of the legal responsibilities of a state under a federal government, I do not have the time.
I will not be responding to you follow-ups.
You have no idea what Californians have tried to do.
The problem of illegal immigration is not with a few people mowing lawns and cleaning houses.
Corporate American has found a way to import slavery.

And left us to pay the bill.

Prop 209 is not even about illegals

I am not sure how you think Prop 209 does anything to address illegals, as it is only concerned with discrimination. MS-13 started in LA, and last time I checked, LA is in CA. I am perfectly aware of what a state's responsibilities are, and not discriminating is among them. There are plenty of other ways to deal with illegals than through discriminating against them. Additionally, the CA State Courts have been more problematic than the Federal Courts with regard to illegals.

You're right, it is not about a few people mowing lawns and cleaning houses, it is about a life style that says it is more important for my lawn to be mowed and my house to be cleaned cheaply than legally.

Corporate America hires very few directly, just look at Walmart. They contract with a company that hires it out to illegals. If you shop at Walmart, you are supporting the problem.

CA has more population than other states, and thereby has a real chance at changing things on a national level (including having a Gov become Pres in the recent past). If everyone in CA stopped hiring illegals, and refused to shop at any place that did, the illegals would leave there. But, businesses know that people would rather have cheap goods than legal ones, as demonstrated by people's buying habits.

Sorry Wrong Proposition

Opps
California Proposition 187 (also known as the Save Our State initiative) 1994 ballot initiative to prohibit illegals from using social services, health care, and public education in the State of California. It was initially passed by the voters but later found unconstitutional by a federal court.

The Mara Salvatrucha came from El Salvador.

You have a very distorted view of California.
I, like most people mow my own lawn, and my lovely wife does most of the house cleaning.
I help, just don't ask her. grin

Not sure it matters if Wal-Mart hires direct or not.
They are providing jobs to illegals, that Americans would do for a descent wage.
Just like Tyson and numerous other corporations do.
Employers are the attraction, that bring the illegals up here.
Not a few lawns to mow.

BTW: we do boycott Wal-mart for a variety of reasons.

California Supports You

All this CA bashing. Californis gets back $.80 on the dollar of the Federal Taxes they pay in. Bobdee on your profile it's says your from Ohio your State takes $1.06 for every dollar paid in. All but one State (TX @ $.97) that John McCain won take more than they pay in. All CA wants is their fair share of the money they paid to Feds.
