C530 disk Layout

this is sort of a info and (learning for me) What i found on the C530 (all c5X??) when you view the GHPS drive, I find the following.. (I hope someone can fill in the blanks for me...)

Folder are:
GPS --> Empty now (For GPS POI files??)
POI --> *.GPI (Custom POI files)
SCRN --> Empty now (for screen shots??)
RemoteSN --> *.GCd (I have no idea)
Vehicle --> *.SRF (Auto icons)
Voice --> *.sum / *.vmp (Main Voice, not tts)

Files:
*.SUM (no idea - maps maybe?)
*.Bin (No idea - maybe op system??)
*Splash_screen.jpg (your welcome screen/splash)
*.Ver (No idea)
*.Gcd (No idea)

Anything I am missing?!???

I need to find this info to help me with some project that I am thinking of doing (programming)

Thanks in advance!

Interesting...you didn't mean GPX did you?

RemoteSN --> *.GCd (I have no idea)

I think that should be "RemoteSW - and it's where some of the firmware update files are placed.

*.SUM (no idea - maps maybe?)

No, maps have a .IMG extension. There is the basemap, GMAPBMAP.IMG, which is used when you zoom right out, or move to an area not covered by the detailed map(s). The detailed maps: GMAPPROM.IMG and you can also have some supplementary maps GMAPSUPP.IMG that slot between the two.
The .SUM files are produced by the C5xx... and seem to be licencing related.

*.Bin (No idea - maybe op system??)

More firmware files. BTW, firmware files can be deleted once they've done their job. Also, I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a way of downdating (if there's such a word) things like the SiRF receiver - you can't persuade it back to an earlier version. This doesn't apply to the main firmware.

Quote:

*Splash_screen.jpg (your welcome screen/splash)

Any .JPG's can be called up on the screen and then set as the Splash Screen. The one detailed above, is Garmin's original. Once set, the actual .JPG can be deleted - i.e. it's been copied into another area.

Quote:

*.Ver (No idea)

Don't know. fs_image.ver has a part no. in it.

Quote:

*.Gcd (No idea)

Firmware updater - especially GUPDATE.GCD - can be deleted.

One other file of interest is GarminDevice.xml - this is some sort of inventory of the unit. I believe it is used by Webupdater. If you copy it to a flash card, or memory stick, you can use Webupdater to update that instead. That way you get a chance to look at what it's going to do.

I'm intrigued that you've not come across any .UNL files. These (especially GMAPPROM.UNL) contain the 25 digit unlock code for the maps. They are not referenced except after MAJOR reset events (downdating the firmware is one such example). If they're not present after such an event, you'll find yourself in crisis mode, with the C5xx complaining that none of the maps are routeable and it can't continue without them.
I have actually had two C510's - the first was supplied with this file, and the second wasn't. Very odd.

What else...
You didn't mention \Garmin\gpx\current.gpx, which is a working copy of the Favourites. If you place .GPX file anywhere in the file system, it will be incorporated into the Favourites and then deleted. Mapsource creates TEMP.GPX in the \gpx directory.

In the firmware, there are references to files and directories that aren't supplied - Help files, Demo files, Debug directories etc. There is also mention of another map file GMAPPROM1 that doesn't seem to do much.

There is a view of my C510's minimalist file system HERE

Have fun!

No "current.gpx" on my C530

I have saved many locations in my Favorites while travelling and I they are displayed in My Favorites on my unit.

However, I am unable to download them to my PC as there is no "current.gpx" file in the folder garmin\gpx on my C530. I really need to access those saved locations. I sent an email to Garmin last week but got no answer yet.

How do I get MapSource to create the TEMP.GPX file mentioned in the quote, in order to retrieve it to my PC after?

I created a one-waypoint test.gpx file and as mentioned in the quote it was added to my Favorites, but still nothing in my GPX folder.

I can access my C530 with MapSource. It can retrieve my Unit ID when I press Utilities>Get Unit ID... So this is working.

When I ask MapSource to get My Favorites, it properly sees my unit but I get the message: "The selected device has no waypoints on it" and I believe that the reason is that there is nothing in the GPX folder. Where are those Favorites???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

I can't really offer any explanation for this - it's not hidden, or marked as a System file is it? (I take it you're using Windows).
Other than that, this is a documented feature - and so if it's not working, it's a fault of some description.

This is just a consequence of creating a Waypoint in Mapsource and hitting the "Send to Device" option. If you have a look round the file system before you disconnect and reboot the C530, you should spot it. (Of course, newer versions of Mapsource could always change the name/location).

Again, it's documented that you can simply copy .gpx files to the unit manually.

I think it reads that out of \Garmin\Garmindevice.xml

You could try accessing the C530 in 'Garmin USB GPS' mode, rather than as a disk. This is undocumented and can sometimes lock the unit up, so use at your own risk. Mapsource certainly supports it in this mode, but I don't know if it stills relies on the presence of Current.gpx or not.

To switch to this mode, you need to hold the "TIME" for about 7 seconds, to take you into the diagnostics and then plug in the USB cable. It may prompt for drivers at this point -which you can get from the Garmin website, if they didn't already get loaded with Mapsource. You can now press "Exit" in the diagnostics, or just leave it sitting on that screen, if you prefer.

All Garmin's utilities should talk to it in this mode (Mapsource/Ximage/NRoute etc) - it will appear as a device, rather than a disk. (In NRoute, you can make a semi-permanent change to the name that is displayed)

No "current.gpx" on my C530

Many thanks Hornbyp for your comprehensive answer. I really appreciate it.

I am using Windows XP Pro. No, it is not an hidden file.

As a test, I created a waypoint in MapSource as a GPX file and uploaded it with MapSource. As you said, the Temp.gpx file was created. I opened it and it had that waypoint in it.

I will wait for an answer from Garmin before attempting to access my C530 in 'Garmin USB GPS' mode, rather than as a disk.

I will let you know what Garmin says about it.

Thanks again,

No Current.gpx

I have seen this happen on my C530. I think, I guess, that it happens when you make the USB connection to you computer and the GPSr has not acquired a "good" lock on the satellites. Or sometimes it may happen if you have turned off the GPS Mode and navigated with the map under "Browse Map".

I have not been able to consistently duplicate not getting Current.gpx.

Try disconnecting the USB and wait for a lock, then reconnect the USB.

Waiting to hear what Garmin has to say.

No "current.gpx" on my C530

Wooowww Summermug, you got it.

I went outside, selected one of those saved locations in my area, hit go and my C530 locked on the statellites. I then cancelled my trip.

Without turning off my C530, I went inside, connected it to my PC and the "current.gpx" was there. I then used MapSource to retrived all the waypoints in My Favorites and it worked. How happy I am...

One question: Is there a setting I can change in MapSource to have the locations in degrees?

Thanks again Summermug, it means a lot to me.

"Current.gpx" on my C530

OK, I used POIEdit to read my now available "current.gpx" and all the Favorites, including my Saved Locations, are displayed in degrees.

Thanks to all

Your Method Worked!!

I used Summermug's method of retrieving favorites off my c530 into mapsourse and it worked like a charm. Now I can see the latitude and longitude of my saved favorites, which can be very important especially when correcting a bad POI location or creating a POI file from exact locations. Thanks Again!
